Plot summary
Paris has been rebuilt in glass and steel, and Monsieur Hulot arrives for a meeting with an American official in an office building where the rooms and corridors look alike. He wanders into a trade exhibition of office furniture and gadgets, among them a door built to shut in silence and a broom fitted with headlights. Barbara, a young American tourist, travels the same city with a tour group that keeps lining up its members and counting them, while she slips away. At nightfall Hulot visits an old friend in a sparsely furnished flat. A restaurant, the Royal Garden, prepares to open while it is still under construction.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about PlayTime (1967)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To save money, some of Playtime's building facades and the interior of the Orly set were actually giant photographs, and Tati used life-sized cutout photographs of people instead of hiring extras.
- Budget crises and other disasters stretched the shooting of Playtime to three years, and storms damaged the specially built set, costing 1.4 million francs in repairs.
- Jacques Tati observed that building Playtime's enormous set cost no more than it would have cost to hire Elizabeth Taylor or Sophia Loren for the leading role.
- During down time on the Playtime shoot, a 27-minute short, Cours du Soir, was filmed on the same sets, with Tati's Hulot teaching students mime, how to smoke a cigarette and how to stumble up steps.
