Plot summary
Valerio Le Rose is ten in 1976 and lives in Rome with his parents, Alfonso and Gina, and a younger sister. He keeps a hiding place in the building, where he leaves food for an imaginary friend. One morning a gunfight breaks out in the street outside and his father is wounded; Alfonso returns from the hospital and the household settles back into its routines. At school, boys taunt Valerio over his father's reputation. He then meets Christian, a slightly older boy with no family, while playing football outside, and the two skip school to wander the town, take money from a church and share the tree where Christian sleeps.
