Plot summary
Lauryn Kirk wants to dance, and her hometown, Glenwood, Indiana, has no school for it. She leaves her brother Joel, a mechanic in the family garage, and goes to Chicago for an audition. The judge finds her hip hop routine lacking and asks for something more sensual and feminine in a few weeks' time. Her car is then towed, and she has no wish to face Joel, so she takes up an offer from Dana, a waitress she meets at a diner, to share her apartment. Dana brings her to Ruby's, a burlesque club, where the owner, Brenda, hires her to keep the books. Russ, the disc jockey, spins there, and Carmen dances on its stage.
