Plot summary

Artemio grows tired of the same days on his farm in the Lombardy countryside, and on his fortieth birthday he leaves for Milan to look for a job and a different life. His cousin Severino, long settled in the city, offers him a place to stay and work, and Artemio accepts. Severino is in fact a purse snatcher, and he draws his relative into his affairs without telling him. Once Artemio understands what his cousin does, he walks away and sets out to return what was taken to the woman it belonged to, Angela, a young career woman. A friendship grows between the two, and she finds him a small studio apartment. His attempts at finding work are held back by his naivety, and the gap between his country habits and her Milanese life brings misunderstandings.
