Plot summary
In 1982 a Soviet moon lander goes down in the Bering Sea. Decades later, biology professor Stephen and his graduate students Ronelle and Sadie board the fishing trawler Harbinger to study how warming water affects whales. Sadie's grandfather Graff owns the boat and takes them to sea with his crew. One night the sonar picks up a signal, and with Sadie at the equipment the crew brings up a Soviet lander sealed in ice. Stephen claims it for science and Graff insists the find belongs to Sadie. Bowman urges Sadie to examine the craft before Stephen can, and she finds the cosmonaut inside died of an infection and takes a skin sample. Stephen threatens her career unless she signs the discovery over to him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Harbinger Down (2015)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Harbinger Down became the most successfully funded sci-fi/horror project in Kickstarter history when its campaign closed on 7 June 2013 with $384,181. Because the budget was so low, Alec Gillis said the film's special effects had to be created at his and Tom Woodruff Jr.'s own expense.
- After their practical effects for The Thing were replaced, Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. uploaded a behind-the-scenes video of their original work; the overwhelmingly positive response was, Gillis said, the tipping point that prompted them to make their own film.
- The film's creatures were made by ADI with practical effects, including animatronics, prosthetic makeup, stop motion and miniatures, and computer-generated imagery was used only to enhance them, such as erasing control wires and gimbals.
- The film's in-story events open on June 25, 1982, a tribute to the release date of John Carpenter's The Thing.
