Plot summary

Timothy Treadwell's camera holds more than one hundred hours of footage from his last five years in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Over thirteen summers he lives among the grizzly bears there, approaching and touching them, and starts Grizzly People to raise awareness for the animals. Friends, family, a pilot, ecologists and a bear biologist recall a man who believed the bears trusted him. Amie Huguenard, his girlfriend, shares his passion for conservation and travels with him on some of the trips. He states that he is protecting the bears from poachers, though a researcher says poaching on Kodiak Island was low. Park officials warn him that close contact is unsafe for the bears and for the people who come near them.

Producer Erik Nelson had begun developing a narrative television special based on Treadwell's life and career, but during a chance encounter with German director Werner Herzog at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Festival he was persuaded to turn the project into a feature-length documentary and to give Herzog directing duties.
Charlie Russell, a naturalist who raised bears for a decade in Kamchatka and corresponded with Treadwell, wrote that Treadwell spent an incredible 35,000 hours, spanning 13 years, living with the bears in Katmai National Park, without any previous mishap.
Treadwell had often discussed his video archives with Palovak, and she quoted him saying, "If I die, if something happens to me, make that movie. You make it. You show 'em." She thought that Werner Herzog could definitely do that.
