Plot summary
Tom Spader is an attorney in the 1970s who has made it his mission to break what he calls the colored man's losing streak. His win in a high-profile case puts him in the limelight, and he decides to leave the mixed lower-middle-class town where the family lives for Greenwich, the posh Connecticut enclave, taking Mabel and their two children along. Mabel is steadfast at his side, and Tom is overworked and stressed. The family is black and upwardly mobile, and in Greenwich the stresses of prejudice press on them and on their children as they settle into the new life.
