Plot summary
Greg Heffley is back in middle school for seventh grade. At home, his older brother Rodrick is looking for chances to cut him down. Their parents, Frank and Susan, tell the boys they must spend more time together, and Susan, who writes a parenting column, hands out mom bucks that the brothers earn for the hours they get along. A local talent show gives Rodrick something to aim for, since he wants the break for his band, Löded Diper. Rodrick also smears chocolate on Greg's pants at church, and the scuffle that follows harms Susan's reputation. When Frank and Susan take Manny on a trip, they leave Greg and Rodrick alone for a weekend of bonding and tell them not to have guests.
