Plot summary
Claude Montgomery works for the Arkansas highway department and lives with his wife Ruby in suburban Lonoke County. Money is tight and the marriage is a jealous, quarrelsome one: Ruby has never got past the fact that Claude once had a relationship with her older sister, Rose. Word arrives that Claude's uncle Hazel has been arrested for attempted murder and armed robbery, and the family rallies. Ruby's mother Jewel and Rose come from Nashville, Tennessee to make the trip with Ruby and Claude. Jewel, who seems to want the couple apart, keeps recalling the past along the road, and Ruby's temper frays the longer they travel.
