Plot summary
Biotechnology has advanced to the point where machines interface with human bodies, and most people no longer feel physical pain or suffer infectious disease, so surgery can be performed on conscious patients in ordinary settings. Saul Tenser is a celebrated performance artist whose accelerated evolution syndrome makes his body grow new organs, and with his partner Caprice he has those organs removed before a live audience. The state's National Organ Registry catalogs and stores newly evolved organs, and its investigator Timlin becomes captivated by his work. Tenser depends on specialized biomechanical devices, including a bed, a machine Caprice uses to operate on him, and a chair that helps him eat. A government police unit wants him to infiltrate a group of radical evolutionists.
