Plot summary
Mars has been colonized, and the settlers are preparing for their first Christmas there. Major Syrtis is putting together a holiday pageant. A woman in the colony is due to deliver the first child born on the planet: she carries an artificially impregnated baby in a bubble worn on her stomach, and the delivery has been timed to the stroke of midnight on Christmas Day. The arrival is meant to signal a new civilization founded on science rather than religion. The pageant still needs a Santa. Then a green figure lands among them, and they assume he is just another man who has painted himself green.
