Plot summary
In 1978 Belfast, a city in the middle of Northern Ireland's religious war, Jim brings home a baby chick for each of his sons, Malachy and Jamesy, birds he got while working on a farm. The brothers name them Boogaloo and Graham and care for the birds more than they care for themselves. The chicks teach the boys to value living things and to think about what lies ahead of them. By the time the chickens are grown, Jim and the boys' mother give the brothers news that may not fit with keeping two chickens, and the family has to work out what to do.
