Plot summary
Vasco Leitão is a medical student in Lisbon whose studies are paid for by an allowance from his two rich elderly aunts, Efigénia and Perpétua, back in Trás-os-Montes. He has told them he already graduated. In truth he spends his days at popular fairs and in the company of women, among them Alice, a seamstress from the Castelinhos neighborhood. Her father, Caetano, a tailor, is ambitious for his daughter and is familiar with Vasco's debts. On the day Vasco fails his final examination, his aunts announce a visit to Lisbon, wanting to see the practice of their physician nephew.
