Plot summary
Oleg Orlov, an actor of nearly forty in Moscow in 1974, has found little work in the theater or in film, and radio is his one source of income. There he voices a Soviet spy living undercover in America as an oil tycoon. When the station chief cancels the series, Oleg loses his pay, and his wife throws him out of the house. He then meets Lev Nikolaev, a celebrated writer and living classic of Soviet literature, who draws him into a whirl of artistic bohemia, foreign-currency prostitutes, KGB officers and CIA agents, and pushes him to keep writing the spy play on his own.
