The Raven is a cool horror movie featuring once again Price, Karloff and Lorre together with Jack Nicholson. It's about two rival magicians Price and Karloff. Price playing the good guy and Karloff giving an awesome performance as a villain. Lorre's character is a tweener and the audience will be divided on what they think of his character. Lorre who improvised the entire movie almost is hilarious. He is a great support and comes close to stealing the film from Price and Karloff. I'd say all three were equal in their respective roles. Nicholson's part is small but he does a good job playing a good guy. I am sure he learned a lot acting with these three Movie Legends. Hazel Court also does a great job and was a real beauty. This dvd offers special features where you hear from Director Roger Corman and the Screenwriter for both films. It's interesting to hear the stories behind the scenes of the movies. Of the two movies I liked Comedy of Terrors better because it featured Joyce Jameson and was more silly slapstick humor. Seeing Karloff and Price duel was great though. In that showdown you could pick who you think is the greatest Horror Actor of all time. I recommend this dvd to any true fan of horror and comedy fan getting ready for Halloween. Cheers!
Price is Waldo Trumbull, husband to buxom Amaryllis (Joyce Jameson) and son-in-law to Amos Hinchley (Karloff). Waldo married Amaryllis to get his hands on the family undertaking business - but business has been pretty thin. The owner of the building John F. Black (Rathbone) is planning on evicting him. So Waldo decides to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak - do in Rathbone and collect for his funeral. Only, the Shakespeare quoting, cataleptic Rathbone is not so easily killed. Father in-law is losing it, and Waldo goes around trying to get him to take his "medicine" which is poison. Lorre is Felix Gillie, Waldo's sidekick - and Waldo the grouch really takes the term too literal. Poor Felix is really in love with Amaryllis, who wanted to be an opera singer (maybe in another life?) but married Waldo. Waldo cannot stand her singing, but then no one except Felix likes her singing.
It is great to see the Horror Legends having such great fun. Toss in Joe E. Brown as the graveyard attendant and one nutty cat, it is a black comedy at it's best.
Karloff eulogy is a howl!
A must for any fan of these great actors!

The second romp has Karloff and Price playing rival wizards that are headed for a showdown. Directed by horror quickie Roger Corman and once again scripted by Richard Matheson, it is a riot as the two wizards play a game of one upmanship. This film was so funny, because Price and Corman had been working their way through Poe's tales, so it was great to see one done with tongue firmly through cheek. What for a very young Jack Nicholson in the cast.
A great double feature!

As far as I'm concerned this is one of Roger Corman's best movies. Roger Corman can do a lot with a small budget but this clearly had a bigger budget than his usual Poe inspired movies. Only Corman could take three great horror actors and put them into a comedy and make it work. The three great actors; Price, Karloff and Lorre play their parts well with just enough hamming up to make it charming. The three star actors play wizards with Karloff playing the evil wizard with the inevitable wizard confrontation at the end. You also see a very young Jack Nicholson in one of the secondary roles and he does a very good in keeping with the tone of the picture.
I've always found the sets in the Raven to be top notch and the special effects to both cheesy and charming. The colour is excellent as horror movies made back then tended to use colour as means to compensate for the heavily staged sets.
This is definitely a movie the whole family can watch including the grandparents. If the younger kids are used to movies like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings they may find it a little tame.
I purchased this move a year ago and one main reasons that I'm writing this review at all is that when I first watched this on my old Blu-ray player it didn't have the ability to upscale the DVD and as you know watching a regular DVD through a Blu-ray player on a high def TV doesn't always provide for such a sharp picture. However my new Blu-ray player does DVD upscale and both the Raven and the Comedy of Terrors looked fantastic on the high def TV. For a movie this old, naturally not every scene was sharp and clear but most of it was and the colours just seemed to pop out more than I recall the last time I watched them. If your sitting back hoping for a Bu-ray version of this disc, don't bother waiting, this looked great.
Just a note on The Comedy of Terrors which was an OK movie but not in the same league as The Raven. Basil Rathbone, who unfortunately was relegated to a secondary character, was very under used in this movie. He doesn't even get top billing with the other three actors; Karloff, Price, Lorre and of all of them he is the better actor. Basil Rathbone played opposite to Errol Flynn in two great action movies; Robin Hood and Captain Blood. He was the definitive Sherlock Homes in the series of Sherlock Homes movies made in the 40's. It was actually sad to seem him in this low budget movie as a generic secondary character. Even with all those actors I didn't find this move all that funny. This movie wasn't directed by Roger Corman and it shows. If you are going to use legendary actors in low budget comedy/horror you need the deft touch of a director like Corman who can knows how to mix comedy and terror together on limited budget.
