TMNT (BD)

From a visual standpoint, this CG feature starring the venerable '80s and '90s superheroes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is nothing short of slam-bang; the computer animation has a scope and look that transcends both the original comics and animated series and the three live-action features that preceded it. Writer/director Kevin Munroe creates a striking animated world for the four heroes in a half-shell to live, play, and fight in, and the action sequences are occasionally breathtaking in their speed and complexity. But where TMNT stumbles is its bland plot, which picks up after the last of the live-action features with all four teen turtles in disarray, and abandons longtime villain Shredder in favor of an industrialist (well voiced by Patrick Stewart) who recruits the Foot Clan (including Karai, played by Zhang Ziyi) to revive thirteen ancient monsters to aid in his world domination scheme. It's a simple and fun story for kids, but longtime Turtles fans will miss the wry humor and smart sense of irony of the original comics (created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who gets an executive producer credit here) in this storyline. Still, for most adolescent audience members, such concerns won't matter a whit in the face of the abundant action. --Paul Gaita

Different take on the Turtles, great CGI

Different take on the Turtles, great CGI
I believe the movie is called TMNT because the first "T" may mean Twenty-something, as they are no longer teenagers. This movie starts out showing the turtle's in the future: the Shredder is dead, they are no longer fighting crime as a group as they have regular jobs (except Raph) and Leonardo has left to pursue ways of becoming a better leader in South America.(random?) But of course, the turtles reunite just as evil forces from thousand of years ago appear in New York and need to be dealt with. This is pretty much a stand-alone movie. Some would say it comes after the live-action trilogy from before, but that is not case. (Splinter has both ears and they don't live at train station) There is part where they show their trophy case, and there are items that relate to the other movies, but then there's the canister that says TCRI (from series and novels) instead of TGRI (from the second live-action movie). Confusing... The CGI is excellent, and pretty famous voice actors: Chris Evans, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Stewart, Kevin Smith, Ziyi Zhang, and Mako, in his final role, as Master Splinter. Laurence Fishburne narrates, and Kevin Michael Richardson, who plays Shredder in the new CGI TMNT series on Nickelodeon, plays the villain General Aguila in this film. The film is well done, well paced, but it may confuse those who have no knowledge of the turtles, and even those who do as there are continuity issues (references to both the live-action movies and series). If you can look passed that, this movie is quite enjoyable, and as I said before, this movie has great CGI! Very reccommended!
