I never grew up in the exact way Billy did, per say, but the sentiments of a boy working hard, asking God for assistance, and hunting with 2 of the finest dogs put into live-action film are just the staples of this tale. The core values are timeless, that even though we may get what we want, it may lead us to unfortunate turns of events...and eventually, to what we need to learn, as the father proclaims in the end "Maybe it's God's way of explaining to Billy about his dogs."
The answer? Billy's love of the dogs will always remain in his heart, and God will always want Billy to remember that, for both how God gave Billy those dogs, and took them. But, that the love will always remain. Truly, what a sublime message for a movie of this time.
Despite this film's low production value, I would love to share this film with my own, or others' children some day so that they too can learn some core lessons of life: that working hard is good, asking God for help/favors always, and to be fair/well-mannered, honorable, smart, and cunning (in the face of danger).
A movie that truly stands the test of time; a movie that forever echoes the love a boy has for his own dogs.
