Product Description
What do you get when you combine four bumbling American tourists, a $5000 puppy and a dead body? Inspired lunacy starring John Candy (Delirious), James Belushi (Mr. Destiny), Cybill Shepherd (Special Delivery), Sean Young (Fire Birds), Richard Lewis (The Wrong Guys), Ornella Muti (Oscar), Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties), Joss Ackland (White Mischief), Elsa Martinelli (The Indian Fighter) and George Hamilton (Zorro: The Gay Blade). Lewis and Young are two down-and-out Americans attempting to return a lost dog to its Monte Carlo socialite owner for a $5000 reward. But when the owner is murdered, they become the prime suspects. But who's the real killer? The roulette loser (Candy)? The gigolo (Hamilton)? Or could it possibly be... the dog? Once Upon a Crime is the perfect film to see after a brain-taxing day – directed by SCTV comedy legend Eugene Levy.

(My original review posted in 2003:) I've been eagerly awaiting word that this was to be released on DVD...what a cast! John Candy, Jimmy Belushi, Cybill Shepherd, Sean Young, Richard Lewis, George Hamilton (his best comedy role), the great Giancarlo Giannini, even a humorous turn by the director, Eugene Levy (Candy's buddy from SCTV) as a casino cage manager! This one harkens back to the screwball comedies of the forties, and is a real joy. It's a comedic crime caper that unfolds in romantic Rome and exciting Monte Carlo, with loveable characters scrambling to avoid suspicion and arrest by the suitably weighted (yet hilarious) Giannini as "Inspector Bonnard"...and who'd have thought Richard Lewis would hold his own as Sean Young's love interest? As a feuding American couple, Shepherd & Belushi are priceless, as they rediscover their love, by discovering they have larceny in their hearts; and in the end, we finally learn who the real culprits are in one of those "gather all the suspects together in one room and reveal the murderer" scenes (always fun!)...can't tell from the info, but the DVD's "extras" will be probably be few, the picture and sound will be good to very good (MGM puts out good transfers, normally), but unfortunately, it looks like this small gem is not going to get the widescreen treatment it deserves...why a studio EVER releases anything in Pan & Scan is beyond me. But hey, at least it's available, and that's great news for those of us who love this film...and those of you who will now have the joy of discovering it!
What I enjoy about this flick is the non-judgmental nature of the roles. It might be rich or not rich, but not what color, creed, gender, etc you may happen to be. It is simple slapstick. All humans equally ridiculous. No one profound. I'm pretty sure I saw this 20 years ago as a kid. But it's not so memorable in-and-of-itself. Similar plot devices across hundreds of others. If you're over 30 you may think, did I see this or just something like it? Probably both. That sums it up.
Enjoyable non-preachy romp. It's kind of like a saltine. Used to be everywhere, but now you have crackers far more sophisticated and far more demanding. Sure free range, grass fed, chicken bone broth with kale goes best with a gluten free, quinoa cracker, but sometimes you just want a cup o campbells and a saltine. This is the later.
White FS DVD:
-Fullscreen (1.33:1 aspect ratio).
-Synced subtitles and CC.
-Making of featurette (interlaced).
-A few trailers/ads.
Black WS DVD (published by Kino Lorber):
-Widescreen (1.85:1 aspect ratio).
-English Subtitles that are delayed by several seconds. (probably not resynced from the FS subtitles that included "This movie has been formatted to fit this screen" message at the beginning).
-A few more trailers for different movies.
---
If you're able to back up the video to a local drive, you can mix in fixed subtitles for the WS release and/or edit the subtitles using MKVToolNix and Subtitle Edit. You can find subtitle files online, too.
I bring this up because someone was complaining about the subtitles and Amazon removed the ability to reply to reviews recently.
One final note, unlike the Amazon version of "Trading places" with Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy, Amazon did not cut anything from this move, so that is another great thing.
