Product Description
It's graduation day at Huntington Hills High-- a time for Pomp and Circumstance, tassels and mortarboards, and serious introspection about the future. But tonight, the seniors will leave all that behind for the things that really matter; romance, revenge and rock 'n' roll. Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green and Jennifer Love Hewitt star in one raucous comedy about the ultimate teen party, a once-in-a-lifetime alternate universe where class nerds become class studs, super-jocks are humiliated, and freshman crushes blossom into grown-up romance. From prom queen to bimbo, meathead to misfit, everyone will be there for a hormone-charged bash tapped for out-of-control fun. BONUS! Includes SMASH MOUTH'S Music Video for Can't Get Enough of You Baby.

This underrated teen comedy from 1998 is guilty of being a proud underachiever, and it doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but look closely and you'll find the makings of a much better movie buried under all the keg-party antics. The basic story is typical for this kind of comedy. A young, aspiring writer named Preston (Ethan Embry) has been lusting after class beauty Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt, from TV's Party of Five) for four years of high school, but he's never had the nerve to tell her. Now that they're about to graduate he's finally worked up the courage to write her a soul-baring love letter. At the raucous graduation keg party that takes up most of the movie's 98 minutes, Preston agonizes while Amanda's selfish jock ex-boyfriend tries to win her back, and delivering his love letter turns out to be more difficult than he ever imagined. What's interesting about Can't Hardly Wait has little to do with its attractive leads, however. The most engagingly real and entertaining characters are the misfits who show up in the subplots, including a geek (Charlie Korsmo) who turns into the life of the party, and a pair of old friends (Seth Green, Lauren Ambrose) who confront each other about their mutual needs and insecurities. There are some really good scenes between these two, and this modest movie has a few other pleasant surprises up its sleeve. That doesn't make it particularly good, but it does make it an agreeable waste of time. --Jeff Shannon

All in all it has the makings to be great. I am just happy this amazing movie is finally getting the attention it deserves!
The setting is a high school graduation party. Everyone shows up but nothing turns out as expected. The geek winds up with the girl of his dreams. The nerd becomes stud for a night and the most popular guy in school while extracting long deserved vengeance from the jock who tormented him for four years. The jock reaps the bitter harvest of what he has sown and winds up as a loser. The least popular girl in school finds love. All the wrongs are righted. It is a fantasy of the first order in this respect.
This film is good for a few laughs. It is nothing to get all excited about except for those of us who did suffer through high school. For us, it is a vicarious thrill to see all of the wishes fulfilled. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Jennifer Love Hewitt to show up on my doorstep but it is nice to wonder about such things. I'll probably die of old age before my school bully runs out of money from his pro football contract but it's nice to think it could be otherwise. That's what this movie is all about wish fulfillment for those of us who were not of the IN crowd.
The acting and entertainment rate 3 stars. The concept and wish fulfillment get 5 (only because more is not an option). I split the difference at 4.
Enjoy and think of what could have been.
I actually made Amanda’s yearbook quote my 8th grade yearbook quote, so clearly I was a huge fan of this movie.
Seeing Seth Green as “Special K” and Ethan Emery as a love sick puppy makes me smile.

The film precedes American Pie and is much better than it, despite Pie managing to become a household name almost overnight. Maybe the lack of needless crude humor hurt Can't Hardly Wait. But it's also a part of the charm.
The plot is nothing original so no point going into detail about what is essentially a teen crush movie with a party setting. But it's the characters that make it so great. As in most things he's in, Seth Green steals the show in this case by being pretty fly for a white guy. The rest of the cast is also incredible and it's a fun game just watching this film to see who had a cameo in it. Despite the many times I've seen it I completely forgot Jason Segal (I Love a You Man, How I Met Your Mother) had a brief but funny part, in apparently one of his first roles.
The bonus content is great with featurettes clocking in just under an hour in total plus two commentary tracks (one from the original release and then the 10 year anniversary edition). The picture quality isn't amazing with noticeable (but not too heavy) grain (which isn't unexpected from an indie that's a decade and a half old) but it's a pretty solid transfer. The sound is decent but I haven't watched it with surround. If you were into alternative/punk rock from the decade, you'll appreciate the soundtrack if not the sound.
Some sellers here currently have it for less than £3 inc p&p (for a blu-ray!) so no excuse to check it out if you grew up in that era. And if you do like it, check out Josie & The Pussycats and Trojan Wars (other forgotten gems of the era!).
A huge party at the end of the school year and everyone’s invited and all the high school kids will be there. A guy now 18 and getting ready to move and go out into the world is in love with a beautiful girl who is now recently single. He’s going to the party and so is she. Will tonight be the night he tells her. Funny, sweet, well written.
