Just fourteen, she enlists the help of Rooster Cogburn (Academy Award® Winner Jeff Bridges), a one-eyed, trigger-happy U.S. Marshall with an affinity for drinking and hardened Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Academy Award® Winner Matt Damon) to track the fleeing Chaney. Despite their differences, their ruthless determination leads them on a perilous adventure that can only have one outcome: retribution. A 14-year-old girl needs a man with "true grit" to help her bring in the fugitive who killed her father. That she settles on Rooster Cogburn--a one-eyed, booze-soaked, potbellied U.S. marshal on the downward curve of his career in law enforcement--is the glorious springboard for all versions of True Grit: the Charles Portis novel, the 1969 western that won an Oscar for John Wayne, and the 2010 Coen brothers adaptation. The Coens have some mighty shoes to fill in their version, and their choice for the eye-patch is Jeff Bridges, who growls his way through an understated take on Rooster. Matt Damon plays LaBoeuf, the Texas Ranger who joins the hunt; Josh Brolin is the scurvy killer; and Barry Pepper is the leader of the outlaw gang. Working as usual with cinematographer Roger Deakins, the Coens exhibit their clear, crisp view of western places, thrillingly creating new takes on recognizable vistas such as the frontier town, the snowy forest, and the isolated cabin at night. The Coens revel in the incredibly ornate dialogue, which allows their sardonic attitude to bleed into the material--young actress Hailee Steinfeld doesn't seem at all fazed by the language, which may be a key reason she got the job as heroine Mattie Ross. While True Grit doesn't have the heft of the best films in the Coens' arsenal (there's something very formal and even a wee bit academic about their stroll through this familiar text), they do create a pleasant sense of a good yarn, retold around the campfire for the umpteenth time. --Robert Horton

Feisty 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Steinfeld) hires Cogburn (Bridges), a boozy, trigger-happy lawman to go after an outlaw named Tom Chaney (Brolin) who has murdered her father. The bickering duo are accompanied on their quest by a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (Damon) who has been tracking Chaney for killing a State Senator. As the three embark on a dangerous adventure, they each have their "grit" tested in various ways.
I guess it would be appropriate to start by saying I'm not the biggest fan of the Western genre, so my review should probably be taken with a grain of salt
After doing a brief comparison between this movie in the book is based off of, ‘True Grit (2010)’ has a reputation for being Incredibly close to the media that has inspired it; Each character is true to their original forms, and the overarching plot is not changed by much. The common consensus is that some (minor) events have been added to this film that are not in the novel at all - perhaps as an artistic choice made by the directors - And that the inclusion of these events is done in a way that still respects Portis’ efforts made in his own writing. Another noteworthy change is that the dark humor in the original story Is removed (Dark being rooted in stereotypes elated to marginalized populations); While some may call this a result of a society that emphasizes The Importance of being “politically correct”, I would venture to guess this was done so as to make this work of art appeal to a larger amount of people - and, who really can be particularly upset about that? ?
Related to my last point, the nature of Mattie's Character given the context is impressively progressive. Maddie - who I remind you is a 14 year old girl - is presented as assertive, Well spoken, and Influenced by the need to take matters into her own hands. With the exception of some jests being made by others about her age, sexist ideals are not depended upon to create conflict or invalidate her motives and ambitions as a character. This awards Maddie with opportunities that will be a pleasant surprise - such as when when she educates an adult or reveals the extent of her knowledge about activities some might consider to be masculine - And it's fair to say this may be implicit commentary regarding a women's role and the expectations society should have of her as a human being as opposed to those associated with traditional femininity.
Without getting too much away, I will make it a point to say that the conclusion is vehemently predictable, and there are no moments meant to be inherently dramatic or suspenseful. This is to be expected given the straightforward method of character development and dialogue, but he manner in which this end comes to fruition may be unexpected by this film’s target audience.
Not like your traditional Western by any means -
But I see no problems with that.
I would recommend!
This is a movie to watch over and over. Jeff Bridges is perfect for this role!!!

Adelante.
