Product Description
Screen favorite Kurt Russell (VANILLA SKY, STARGATE) teams up with funnyman Martin Short (FATHER OF THE BRIDE I&II, JUNGLE2JUNGLE) in an outrageously wild comedy that's sure to drive you overboard! Russell plays hilariously laid-back Captain Ron -- a vagabond seaman who charts a course for comedy when he skippers the newly inherited Caribbean yacht of corporate executive Martin Harvey (Short) and his family! With his dubious nautical skills, Captain Ron takes the helm and creates wave after wave of hilarity as he leads the Harveys on a wildly amusing oceanic voyage in their dilapidated sailing vessel, all the while driving well-meaning Martin Harvey off the deep end!

This movie is really cute- Kurt Russell is the captain of a boat that a family inherited and is moving from somewhere in the Carribbean to sell. I love that Russell thinks its okay to keep getting lost- and is so nonchalent about it being okay to stop and ask directions. And some of the islands they have to stop on and ask- are so dangerous.
Then when he tells the father of the family not to wander around the island because of gorillas....and Russell isn't specific about what kind- as they are the "armed" kind. That these armed mercenaries end up on the boat with them- by choice and accident- its just one absurd mistake after the next- and Russell plays this innocently stupid man-
If you haven't seen this movie- it is A MUST. You can't pass one like this up. It's one of those "feel good", lightly funny movies that you will be glad you saw. As in all 90s movies, in the end, everyone learns a lesson- even when those lessons might not make much sense. And it's one of those moments in a life that is life changing- that you spend all this time with a person- get to know them so well- and you will never see them again. Because Captain Ron becomes part of their little family- and then POOF- he is gone.
Happy Viewing All!
Do not get me wrong. Captain Ron is a movie worth the watch for the sake of watching Kurt Russell’s character. Characters played by Martin Short and Mary Kay Place come across stilted. Either a lack of chemistry between the two actors or a poorly written scripted-lines for each or a sum of both cases hampers a viewers ability to fully enjoy portrayal of their respective characters.
Notable of the screenplay is one humorous scene, which exchange of dialogue accompanied actions are summarized below:
Ron: Hey boss, if you’re goin’ back, stay on the path. There’s guerrillas in these woods.
Ben: Gorillas? Too cool!
Martin: Ben, honey, there are no gorillas, not here.
Ron: Oh, yeah, there is, boss.
Martin: Sorry, capt. Ron. Gorillas are native to equatorial Africa.
Okay? No gorillas. Not here. No way.
Katherine: Honey, honey, stay on the path, okay?
Martin: (Groan) Now he’s got her buying it, Unbelievable.
Martin walks away, taking the path at first. Soon after he steps off the path and walks into the jungle. Soon thereafter squawking birds spooks him. He stops and looks around. “Gorillas, right," he says. Then suddenly a rifle barrel appears on screen, pointed at him. He is stopped in his tracks, wide-eyed, looking startled. At the other end of the rifle is a guerrilla. Behind him stand several other fellow guerrillas.
Later that night of that same day. Martin, speaking to his wife, Katherine, says:
"He could’ve said, “revolutionaries,” “freedom fighters.” But no. Go-rillas. No. He did it on purpose. You can see it in his eyes. Excuse me, his eye!”
