Boy, was I wrong! Will Ferrell did a very good job with the voice, and George was cute enough that I found him irresistible. Although I missed Gnocchi, the cat from the TV series, it was refreshing to see some different characters (like baby jungle animals and Clovis's robotic creations). The scenario by which Ted became the Man with the Yellow Hat differed from the scenario presented by the TV series, and I noticed that the characters in Ted's building differed between the two as well.
Basically, the movie was very sweet, and George was endearing. The premise that Ted had to go claim a giant artifact was a little Indiana Jones for me--he didn't seem to have any problem with just taking another culture's artifacts from a faraway land. But there's no way Ted was malicious, so you have to just assume that he didn't think better of it.
Even the "bad guy" of this film is only motivated by the desire to attain his father's love; there's nobody really evil in the story. It's great to see a family film where everybody is pretty nice without being excessively cheesy about it.
I'm really glad we rented Curious George, and I'm excited that our copy will arrive soon!
But to say that this movie was a pleasant surprise is an understatement. My 3 and 5 year old boys love this movie, and I love to watch it with them. It contains nothing objectionable for small children. No dumb potty humor or jokes about squirrels and their nuts, or jokes about flatulence. This movie is pure, clean fun. The children identify with George. He is fun to watch as he gets into innocent mischief.
But perhaps my favorite thing about the movie is that I can watch it. It has an actual plot and some of the one liners are genius. (Man in yellow hat: I'll give you an extra $10 to stop calling me yellow. Cab driver: You got it, Sunshine.)
Grown ups can watch this movie and enjoy it, all the while their children will be delighted from start to finish. I highly recommend this for all ages, but I would especially recommend this if you have very young children and have been wondering if there was anything out there that they would enjoy, that wouldn't drive you bonkers.
(For those of you appreciate good animation, it's brilliant, both in color and execution.)
This is just about the perfect family movie.
I'm sure this will be a family favorite for years to come. I highly recommend.
Note: the way the main characters are portrayed is different from that of the PBS series (supporting characters in the show and movie are completely different). Here the Man in the Yellow Hat is the main character, while George is the main character in the show. My son loves both, however.
The man with the yellow hat now has a name, Ted (Will Ferrell), and a new career as a Bloomsberry Museum tour guide. I had misgivings when I saw Ferrell's name. His other comedies are not G-rated entertainment and I wasn't interested in exposing my sons (ages 8 and 6) to Ferrell's Saturday Night Live shtick. There's nothing to fear though.
The movie's G-rating could stand for "gentle," a pleasant change of pace from other kids fare such as the G-rated (for "gross") Space Chimps and the PG-rated Planet 51 and Open Season . Curious George's charm is that he generates laughs without trafficking in the rude humor - defecating, passing gas, profanity - now so common in animated children's movies.
Joining Ferrell are Drew Barrymore, Dick Van Dyke, Eugene Levy, David Cross and Frank Welker as George. The voice work is good but, most importantly, the stars don't distract from the animation like the odd pairing of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus did in Bolt .
In summary, Universal Pictures deserves much credit for maintaining the character's innocence after what I've read was a long, drawn-out process to bring Curious George to film. While the film doesn't quite reach classic status, it makes for a wonderful family movie night and will entertain children ages 8 and younger. Rating: Four stars.
UPDATE: We held a kids movie night, pairing Curious George with cheese pizza, 40 bananas (in lieu of popcorn) and Neon Monkey Tattoos . The theme party was successful. I recommend you "Make it a Monkey Movie Night!"
