This two-disc set certainly improves upon the fluffy Reloaded DVD release. Although there's still no Wachowski brothers talking about their creation, there's a lot of good stuff here in the three main segments. We are constantly reminded how long the back-to-back filming schedule was, and it's most interesting to hear from the actors and artists as they come to the end of this long road. When a white rabbit flashes on screen, you can "branch" the most interesting documentary footage: how "bullet time" is being recalibrated and how you go about replicating so many Agent Smiths. A timeline is wonderfully put together, but cumbersome to navigate through. The extras certainly illustrate how the movie did not deserve to be passed over for a few technical Oscar nominations. --Doug Thomas

Now that that is out of the way, this movie is a flawless ending to an amazing story about love and about the beautiful irrationality of the human spirit when stacked against the odds of a cold universe's cause and effect. Neo and Trinity travel to machine city and, inevitably, Neo faces off with agent Smith for a final fight. Zion completes it's final defense against the machines. The matrix and mankind are forever changed as a result and after getting a little older and watching all three movies over the last few days, I am honestly even more blown away by them than I was when I first viewed them.
There are no huge plot holes like some of the others have said. It is obvious to anyone who does a little digging online that a clear and cohesive theme is communicated throughout all 3 movies. I'll likely watch them again in the near future!
Other than the fact it direly needs a final chapter in the series, my only other complaint is that the directors seem to suffer from "too much or too little". In part 2, for instance, there were so many fight scenes as to become a bit dull after a while. (I'm sure we all recall that scene between Neo and a zillion Agent Smiths that dragged on long enough to call a few friends and read the daily paper before it ended.) Well in part 3, there are almost no fight scenes at all...and let's face it...part of the lure of The Matrix is in the out-of-this-world fighting scenes. Another thing there was too little of in part 3 was Morpheus. His John-the-Baptist to Neo's Christ in parts 1 & 2 was beyond great. In part 3, however, Morpheus is little more than wallpaper. For that matter, even Neo felt like wallpaper. The only one who really had me on the edge of my seat was Jaida Pinkett's character.
All those criticisms aside, I liked part 3 a lot more than part 2. Nothing, of course, can beat part 1. (But I'd sure like to put that theory to the test with a part 4 - and a Morpheus who is back to his old dynamic self.)
Mythic stories are an acquired taste. They are full of ideas symbolically represented and if you aren't familiar with the symbols the significance of certain things will go entirely unnoticed. The whole trilogy is an amazing study in story form of the possibilities of free will, exploring the boundaries of what consciousness is and the possibilities of technology to radically enlarge our universe. Consider the notion that the real universe, the universe of the the machines and Zion, is only part of the whole of reality. The other part is our imagination. The matrix is only the most insiduous use of virtual technology. If we immerse ourselves willingly in it then we can enjoy the powers that the Zionists had used to desperately pursue their cause.
Matrix Revolutions ends with this arrangement as a distinct possibility, that humans are free to live outside of the Matrix. Why not choose to live in both worlds? Neo's sacrifice (both Christ-like and Taoist in its character (remember Luke Skywalker's willingness to lay down his saber?)) opens up possiblities beyond anything most of us have considered. The scene with the Oracle and the Architect shows again how two opposite elements have, after a number of "cosmic cycles" of the matrix simulation resolved a higher balance in the program world between balance and imbalance, between a dynamic (chaos theory, complexity theory) and static equilibriums.
This is merely one thread of perennial thought that this movie embodies. It really is a masterwork of myth, philosophy and science fiction. Beside that is does have kick ass action!

The third movie is more straightforward and action-based. The effects are dominating but it says less than each of the other previous two movies. It's satisfying but a bit too long. The answer is the solution to stop the destruction of Zion and to recall it's the 6th version so it's a cycle when these will reoccur in some future times. The issue is with Neo. He is stuck in the railway station between the machine world and the hacker's world. It's controlled by the Trainman. He has total authority here. Neo needs help here. The physical battle with the machines and Zion takes a long time with very complex C.G. special effects. This is followed by a personal battle between the former agent Smith, and Neo, which dominates the later story. There is a tendency to have these characters reinforce these fighting actions through huge reactions to their environment. They, for example when they crash together. A huge force wave is generated to show and support this. The story takes a turn for the unexpected when a deal is offered by Neo and the A.I. sentient beings.
Revolutions is much better the Reloaded. The effects are better the story is better mainly because the writers new what was left to do. The main complaint with Revolutions is there is not a great deal of time spent in the actual Matrix. Most of the action is in Zion most of the conversations happen on board various vessels. It is as if they save the Matrix for the last battle and it must be protected before then. One more annoying thing in this movie is Trinity's death at the cinema it annoyed me on blu ray it was worse because it takes her so long to die. It would be like Yoda spilling everything he ever said before he died in Return Of The Jedi. The whole Smith being in the real world wears thin quickly but he is dismissed by a blined Neo who now has the same powers in the real world as he does in The Matrix don't know where that comes from but it seems to work.
In closing this is a pretty good movie. It does what the final part of any trilogy should do tie up loose ends and go out on a high. Could it have been better ? Yes but not by much. I still think that Reloaded and Revolutions should have been one 3hour movie. But this does well for itself. It ends most story arcs and leaves it open for more in the future.
