Product Description
Based on the incredible true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and his ingenious assassination plot targeting Adolph Hitler, this engrossing thriller reenacts the daring operation to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known.
Amazon.com
Unpretentious and dramatically straightforward, Valkyrie is a suspenseful yet ennobling story about the last attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler prior to the end of World War II. Tom Cruise is effective if a little opaque as hero Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who channels his anger at Hitler's atrocities and mismanagement of the war by joining a secret organization bent on killing the Führer. When the outspoken Stauffenberg hits on the idea of linking Hitler's death with an official policy to safeguard Berlin during a government crisis--a contingency plan called "Valkyrie"--the group realizes a post-assassination coup could be covered by rapidly implementing the plan. History tells us the plot failed, of course, and Hitler killed himself months later. But that doesn't stop Cruise or director Bryan Singer from approaching the film as a thinking person's thriller, told from inside the conspirators' camp, where the outcome of their deeds were uncertain for several tense hours.
In the tradition of The Great Escape, Valkyrie is a war movie full of famous faces, including Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard. (The lesser-known David Bamber is very good as Hitler, hunched and cracking under pressure.) The film's gravity is offset a bit by the fun of seeing all these actors in a factually-based slice of history, and by a few, interesting stylistic flourishes on Singer's part, including the peculiarly unsettling image of a mosquito sizzled to death in close-up. --Tom Keogh

Following the attempted attempt on his life, Hitler seems even to have been more psychotically convinced of his invincibility and the right course of his actions. This is tragic, and someone left off after the initial firing squads, and the hanging of suspects by piano wire (which is difficult to see) . We are told that Hitler delighted in watching films of these events, while the show trials of Ronald Friesler continued into 1945, wasting considerable national resources and attention. I doubt that at Christmas, 1944, in the Ardennes, anyone thought an Endsieg (Final Victory) was possible.
Casting of Tom Cruise is curious, for most of the cast make convincing 1940s Germans. He outshines no one, and in some respects is outshone by the lieutenants around him. One of the best casting moves was that of Thomas Kretschmann as Major of the Home Army. Beginning his career in film he did not want to be typecast as "another Nazi" yet has appeared in some truly important films. I would have to add that the German language soundtrack is somewhat more convincing--but this is a personal opinion and not a critique of the film. Another film about the final days of Hitler, "Untergang" was released in the U.S. and did poorly at the box office only released in German with English subtitles, and a much higher level of acting and dramatic tension. This film was released in other countries as "The Bunker" and is now known to be the MI6 account of the final days, a fictionalized version made up by a major British historian without so much as one interview with many of the survivors of events in the Fuehrerbunker in April to May, 1945.
We can be fairly certain that while dramatic, we are seeing a near-documentary on which we can make informed opinions.
Highly recommended for the final reason stated.
I know there might be a few historical inaccuracies, but this film is stellar. Hitler became so powerful because he was able to unite the church, academia, the culture, and the government under his authority. Resisting him meant standing for personal convictions while your pastor, your professors, your favorite celebrities, and your government institutions (basically everyone a person could look to for truth) called such efforts evil, stupid, isolating, and illegal. I'd like to say I would stand with these men and women in such a terrible situation, but I hesitate to make such claims to courage.
The movie itself was well-acted and the plot was developed in such away that people who have never heard of Operation Valkyrie will be able to understand in 1 viewing. And it is very entertaining. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. But what I liked most about it was the character development as each person had to pick a side. I liked seeing the diversity of motives as the film wrestled with the question, "What does true patriotism look like?" Is it loyalty to a leader even as he commits such atrocities that his nation is no longer worthy of respect? Or is it loyalty to what one dreams one's nation should be: a nation of justice and freedom, a nation worth fighting for? Is patriotism really worth giving one's life? Seeing these people who recognized that truly loving Germany meant overthrowing Hitler, having to make decisions about whether it was really worth sacrificing one's life to attempt a coup when Allied victory seemed inevitable, made this film worth watching.

Todo excelente!
The real story of anti-Nazi plot which ultimately led to 20 July crisis is quite well known, let's therefore just present here the main lines. It was already in 1938 that three high ranking officers of Wehrmacht, Field Marshal Erich von Witzlebben and generals Ludwig Beck and Hans Oster formed a conspiracy to overthrow Hitler. After the Kristallnacht in November 1938 revealed the true face of Nazi regime, they were joined by other people, including a prominent conservative monarchist politician Carl Goerdeler and also Helmuth Graf von Moltke, a simple lawyer but who by his familial background had vast connexions in German aristocracy and other elites.
All attempts to push Wehrmacht commanders to overthrow Hitler however failed and finally the plotters decided that it was necessary to kill Hitler first, before any coup attempt. With time, the group grew larger and more high ranking officers joined, including generals Carl-Heinrich von Stulpnagel, Henning von Tresckow and Friedrich Obricht. It was they who attempted to kill Hitler in March 1943, but the bomb placed in his plane failed to detonate. Unable to pierce Hitler's security for the second time, plotters tried to convince again some highest ranking military commanders of Wehrmacht to stage a coup - but without success. It is however revealing, that neither of those men (von Kluge, von Rundstedt, von Manstein and even Rommel!) reported the plotters to Gestapo.
In August 1943 two new men joined the conspiracy, junior in grade, but very efficient and devoted - Lieutenant-Colonel (later Colonel) Albrecht Mertz von Quirheim and Lieutenant-Colonel (later also promoted to Colonel) Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. They quite quickly took the control of the planning of the whole conspiracy and the 20 July 1944 crisis was in great part the result of their efforts, with Stauffenberg taking on himself the riskiest part of the operation. I will say no more - if you are not familiar with this story, you deserve to discover this incredible but true story by yourself.
This film is a fast paced, very tense and extremely dramatic reconstruction of events preceding the 20 July and of this famous crisis itself. The pace and the suspense are such that at the end of the film it is really hard to believe that 124 minutes passed. The film also tells a tragic tale (it is hardly a spoiler to say that Hitler survived - and therefore the conspirators couldn't) and yet it is not depressing - the plotters failed, BIG TIME, but they preserved their honor, and therefore once the last words of this film are spoken, it leaves the viewer very shaken and yet somehow strangely elated. Indeed I could almost hear Stauffenberg and his companions say those words from the Bible: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I kept the faith" - especially considering that most of those men were devoted Catholics...
Another treasure of this film is the presentation of life under the Nazi regime with its main "attraction" being present everywhere and affecting everybody, the Nazis included - mind paralizing, bones freezing FEAR! With the possible exception of the four men in the First Circle of Power whom we can see briefly in one scene (Hitler, Goring, Goebbels and Himmler) EVERYBODY in Third Reich lived in constant terror, as they could be arrested, tortured and executed at any moment for any reason. This is also why almost everybody in this film all the time takes a great care to not speak too openly, as Gestapo spies and microphones are everywhere...
Actors did an amazing job in this film, including Tom Cruise, who, notwithstanding all the excentricities and oddities of his personal life, is a GREAT ACTOR - and proves it here again! For me, the second best performance in this film was that offered by Bill Nighy, who plays general Olbricht, a man almost paralyzed with fear but who nevertheless soldiers on the best he can. Terence Stamp, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Wilkinson are also excellent.
Bottom line, this is an excellent film telling a true story in a great and very emotional way. I will absolutely keep my DVD for another viewing. Enjoy!
