Holds Up Extremely Well Over 3 Decades, Most Relevant When One Came Of Age During Or Before Vietnam
Bat 21 is a movie I come back to every few years. There are only a small number of movies that I seek out to watch more than once. While not the most theatrically outstanding movie I found the story of loyalty, sacrifice, and dedication on Capt. Clark's part and the forced awaking of Lt Col. Hambleton to the reality of the Vietnam war up close and personal. I guess you could say it's a story of loss and redemption. I've always been a sucker for that theme and Bat 21 delivers. The movies is "based" on a true story, but takes some liberal license for the sake of a cohesive story. Rather than repeat wikipedia just Google "Rescue of Bat 21 Bravo" to learn the real story which is itself compelling. The short and vague (not to give anything important away) synopsis of the movie is intelligence officer Hambleton (aka Bat 21 played by Gene Hackman) ends of "volunteering" for an aerial surveillance mission. When the plane goes down he ejects into enemy territory. He is observed parachuting by forward air controller (FAC) Capt. "Birddog" Clark (Danny Glover). This begins a relationship where Birddog is his guardian angel helping Bat 21 work his way to rescue. The bulk of the movie is how Birddog struggles to save Bat 21 while the Vietcong try to capture him. But the lessons both of them learn about the war and themselves along the way is what makes this endearing to me.On a side note, I like the plane (Cessna O- 2A Skymaster) that Birddog flies. It has two engines: one in the nose of the plane as one might expect and one "pusher" behind the cabin. What a great plane to fly with a spare into a situation where ground fire could take out one engine. Brilliant!Bat 21 may carry more meaning to me than someone younger. As someone who grew up during the Vietnam war and graduated high school about when it ended. I grew up in a military family with friends and relatives who were part of the war. I expect this has a lot to do with why Bat 21 has so much meaning to me and why I keep coming back to it.Bottom line I think Bat 21 is a great story and holds up much better than a lot of 30 year old movies. I think the lessons within apply as well today as back then. I think it's no surprise I'm giving Bat 21 5 stars. I think it's a great movie for the Vietnam generation with themes that apply today.
