Holds Up Extremely Well Over 3 Decades, Most Relevant When One Came Of Age During Or Before Vietnam
Bat 21 is a movie I come back to every few years. There are only a small number of movies that I seek out to watch more than once. While not the most theatrically outstanding movie I found the story of loyalty, sacrifice, and dedication on Capt. Clark's part and the forced awaking of Lt Col. Hambleton to the reality of the Vietnam war up close and personal. I guess you could say it's a story of loss and redemption. I've always been a sucker for that theme and Bat 21 delivers. The movies is "based" on a true story, but takes some liberal license for the sake of a cohesive story. Rather than repeat wikipedia just Google "Rescue of Bat 21 Bravo" to learn the real story which is itself compelling. The short and vague (not to give anything important away) synopsis of the movie is intelligence officer Hambleton (aka Bat 21 played by Gene Hackman) ends of "volunteering" for an aerial surveillance mission. When the plane goes down he ejects into enemy territory. He is observed parachuting by forward air controller (FAC) Capt. "Birddog" Clark (Danny Glover). This begins a relationship where Birddog is his guardian angel helping Bat 21 work his way to rescue. The bulk of the movie is how Birddog struggles to save Bat 21 while the Vietcong try to capture him. But the lessons both of them learn about the war and themselves along the way is what makes this endearing to me.On a side note, I like the plane (Cessna O- 2A Skymaster) that Birddog flies. It has two engines: one in the nose of the plane as one might expect and one "pusher" behind the cabin. What a great plane to fly with a spare into a situation where ground fire could take out one engine. Brilliant!Bat 21 may carry more meaning to me than someone younger. As someone who grew up during the Vietnam war and graduated high school about when it ended. I grew up in a military family with friends and relatives who were part of the war. I expect this has a lot to do with why Bat 21 has so much meaning to me and why I keep coming back to it.Bottom line I think Bat 21 is a great story and holds up much better than a lot of 30 year old movies. I think the lessons within apply as well today as back then. I think it's no surprise I'm giving Bat 21 5 stars. I think it's a great movie for the Vietnam generation with themes that apply today.

Good quality with original screen on one side and wide screen on the opposite side. It came with clean cover box and no scratch on the DVD. Will buy future Blue Rays + DVD from this store again.

Bat 21 is an excellent story about the truth life shoot down and rescue of Lieutenant Colonel Iceal E. "Gene" Hambleton, the sole survivor of an USAF EB-66B Destroyer electronic warfare aircraft. Portions of the film were highly dramatized, including the climactic battle. Some characters were composites of real people, while others were created for the film. However, some other details were accurate, including the fact that Captain Larry Potts was of African American ancestry.
With all of that said, I highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys war movies or want to learn something about the Vietnam War and LtCol. Hambleton's and rescuers "code talk" that helped lead to the rescue of Hambleton.
The actual rescue took over eleven days, during which a major attack was delayed, resulting in numerous South Vietnamese soldiers being killed and wounded. Several attempts were made to recover Hambleton. Two helicopters were lost and members of its crews were killed or captured. A Forward Air Observer aircraft was shot down and USAF 1Lt Bruce Walker and USMC 1Lt Larry Potts parachuted to the ground safely, eluding capture. In an ensuing attack, six more Americans lost their lives attempting to rescue him. The North Vietnamese, alerted by the intense efforts to find the flyer, increased their efforts to find Hambleton. Walker was discovered and killed by the Vietnamese forces. Hambleton was finally rescued in a land operation by U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. j.g Thomas R. Norris and VNN Petty Officer Third Class Nguyen Van Kiet during a night-time, covert operation from more than 2 miles (3.2 km) behind enemy lines.

Great movie! I had never seen it before. My first duty station was Shaw AFB in South Carolina. The O2A was the first aircraft I suppoted in MSL. Just loved that aircraft. Fun and enjoyable move. Highly recommend.

The English audio works just fine, so don't be put off and there are no issues with regions. You won't find find this excellent movie on a UK Blu-ray, so this is the best option. Hackman in one of his best roles!
