Focus (DVD) Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.

First and foremost, Will Smith's performance was absolutely captivating. His portrayal of Nicky, a seasoned con artist, was both charming and cunning, effortlessly drawing you into his world of high-stakes gambling. Smith's undeniable charisma shines through every scene, and his chemistry with the talented Margot Robbie, who plays his equally cunning partner-in-crime, is electrifying.
The movie's plot, much like a game of poker, keeps you guessing and second-guessing until the very end. The clever twists and turns in the narrative constantly raise the stakes and leave you on the edge of your seat. From the glitzy casinos of New Orleans to the high-pressure con games, every moment is filled with tension and excitement.
What truly sets Focus apart is its attention to detail and the art of misdirection. As a gambling enthusiast, I appreciated how the film delves into the psychology behind successful cons. The skillful manipulation, the mind games, and the "big reveal" moments are executed with finesse, making you feel like you're a part of the hustle.
Visually, Focus is a treat for the eyes. The luxurious settings, the vibrant colors, and the sleek cinematography create a glamorous backdrop that immerses you in the world of high-stakes gambling. The pulsating soundtrack further enhances the atmosphere, amplifying the adrenaline rush throughout the film.
While Focus offers plenty of thrills and excitement, it also delves into the complexities of trust and love. The simmering romance between Nicky and Jess (Margot Robbie) adds an extra layer of emotion and vulnerability to the story. Their dynamic keeps you invested, wondering whether love will flourish amidst the constant deception.
If I were to nitpick, there were a few moments where the plot stretched the boundaries of believability. However, the sheer entertainment value and the magnetic performances by the cast overshadowed any minor flaws.
In conclusion, Focus is an enthralling cinematic experience that combines the allure of gambling with a gripping story. Will Smith's magnetic presence, the intense plot twists, and the sophisticated visuals make this movie a winning bet. So, grab some popcorn, buckle up, and prepare for a wild ride that will keep you guessing until the final hand is dealt!
Great movie. I've seen it twice and will watch it again down the road. It really sensitized me as to how easy and slick people can be to strip you of your belongings. They are pros! A must-see before you travel and... here too. Afterall, foreigners are also advised to be prepared. The US is abroad to everyone else too.
FYI, GREAT ADVICE!: Get a money belt, wear it higher up on your body- PRICELESS! Make front and back copies of your essential cards, passport/papers in case of loss, carry your passport in your money belt on you when out. Keep a business card (on you) of any hotel where you are staying- in case you need directions or need to taxi/Uber back. Especially, if you don't speak the language. Also priceless.
I know first hand. I temporarily lost my passport while abroad. A money belt would have prevented this problem. If not, the copies would have allowed me to get me by. I've had to show my hotel card several times to taxis (got lost, forgot the name of the hotel). Bingo!
