Cold Pursuit
Cold Pursuit, an action thriller infused with irreverent humor, stars Liam Neeson as Nels Coxman, a family man whose quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) is upended following the mysterious death of their son.
Nels' search for justice turns into a vengeful hunt for Viking (Tom Bateman), a drug lord he believes is connected to the death. As one by one each of Viking's associates "disappear," Nels goes from upstanding citizen to ice-cold vigilante, letting nothing - and no one - get in his way.
Product Description
Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson) is a local snowplow operator recently named Citizen of the Year of his small Colorado ski town for keeping the roads open through the winter. Nels' quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) abruptly spins out of control when their son is unjustly murdered by a local drug cartel. Taking the law into his own hands with only the tools of an outdoorsman and snowplow driver, Nels sets out to find those responsible but inadvertently ignites a gang war that threatens to engulf the town- unless he ends it first.

And once again, this movie was also excellent!
Pretty simple premise. Liam Neeson is Nels Coxman, a snowplow driver in Kehoe, Colorado, who starts killing the members of a local drug cartel after they kill his son. Starting at the bottom, he works his way up, killing people higher and higher in the hierarchy until he tangles with the head of the cartel, Trevor "Viking" Calcote (Tom Bateman), a rather over the top character at times. Along the way a rival cartel lead by White Bull Legrew (Tom Jackson) gets involved and not everyone dies from Nels' hands.
It's violent and lots of people die. Unusually, every time someone dies, a cross (or other appropriate symbol) and their name appears. Sometimes this is used for humorous effect. In fact, the movie is packed with humor, from Viking ranting and raving about his son eating processed junk food to him telling his son he can learn all he needs about how to conduct himself from reading Lord of the Flies to some of the comic deaths to how Viking is scared of no one except his ex-wife (Julia Jones as Aya).
At first Liam Neeson is at the forefront, especially early on, and the tone is grim and dark, with him and his wife Grace (played by Laura Dern) just in absolute grief. As the movie progresses the film becomes more of a black comedy and the other characters, especially Viking, White Bull, and Viking's young son Ryan Calcote (Nicholas Holmes), become more the center with extended scenes not even having Liam Neeson in them at all. The film changes so much Laura Dern's character is not only left behind but she literally leaves, as in she leaves Nels and is not seen again. I really think her character is wasted but given the vengeance storyline and the dark comedy, she really didn't fit in as she was written.
There is also a storyline centered around Emmy Rossum as Kim Dash, a Kehoe police officer, that looks promising but kind of goes nowhere and looks now to have been there for occasional exposition for the audience I guess. Like Laura Dern, I think Emmy Rossum was also wasted.
This movie is associated with a few controversies, notably Liam Neeson getting in trouble for remarks he made in an interview that had a lot of people labeling him as a racist and how Parks Canada denied shooting permits in Banff and Jasper National Parks over concerns over environmental damage and that a number of antagonists were First Nations (even though Tom Jackson, who has Cree ancestry, campaigned on behalf of the movie).
A fun movie with a lot of action. It starts out really dark but it doesn't stay that way.
However, it can be used to demonstrate how a perfectly good script (the original Order of Disappearance, watch it in the original Norwegian with subtitles, the dubbed version isn’t as good) can be ruined. Every change is for the worse. This is a revenge movie; making it a female empowerment movie undermines the genre. Aya, in the original, is a total cartoonish bitch; one of the most satisfying moments in the original is altered into a moment of female ascendency. Viking, the crime boss, is supposed to be a psycho racist; having him marry a Native American who subdues and humiliates him makes no sense. The female cop who’s smarter that all the guys, although an often-used movie cliché today, has no place in this movie; this is a revenge movie, remember. Turning Brock “Wingman” Coxman’s “girl” into his loved wife, ring and all is patently ridiculous. In the original she’s another cartoonish bitch we are glad to get rid when she struggles to drag her luggage off at the end. Even Nels Coxman’s wife, another bitch, is softened into a hippyish cliché. The original In Order of Disappearance obviously comes with an anti-female bias; that’s part of the joke. This is not supposed to be a political correct movie.
Making Nels Coxman’s father a crime boss also contradicts the intent of the original; an ordinary peaceful, well respected, man driven to extra human violence by the unjustified murder of his son (this also is a basic cliché of the genre and they’ve violated it.)
The cast is okay but the original was infinitely better. Neeson is very good but I think Skarsgard as “Dickman” might have been better. Bruno Ganz as Papa Popovic in the original is hard to beat so is the rest of the cast of the original which was excellent. The original was a funny black comedy; this is a not as funny gray comedy.
They should teach this in script writing class as a perfect example: how not to mess with a good script.
Delivery was great: on time as promised. Great value for the price!
