1. The Tian Company are the Cult in the book trying to release Cthulhu.
2. The movie characters are the human sacrifices.
3. The spider in the sink is Cthulhu in R'yleh being let out.
4. The depression and insanity people are experiencing from being underwater for so long is the insanity that Cthulhu brings.
5. The humanoid monsters are The Deep Ones.
6. That quick clip of an octopus looking thing is Cthylla, Cthulhu's daughter.
7. Tian has let the Deep Ones out before and they attacked the miners in the past as shown by the mural, the abandoned first drill, Caps locker, and the news paper clippings in the begining. As well as the look on Caps face when he stayed behind.
8. Captain stayed back because he knew Cthulhu/The Deep Ones are destroying all the escape capsules. "23 have launched" but the only two survivors were the two at the end. It even shows the Deep Ones going after the escape pods as they did in the begining of the film.
9. TJ Miller is/has gone insane as he acts like his stuffed rabbit is real. Cap goes crazy because he can't tell how old his dead daughter is. Kristen Stewart even states at the begining that she is going a little crazy. All because of Cthulhu. Emily is going crazy the whole time, and Smith is so out of it he just doesn't know what's going on to go crazy.
Yeah, I can suspend belief for a science fiction movie, but, a man made mining structure at the bottom of the Marianna Trench 6, almost 7 miles down??? I don't think so. Unless it was in the future like Star Trek 24th century with technology to create structures that can withstand the weight and pressure of water at 6 miles down. Anyway, the beginning titles indicate that there are over 300 crew in this mining structure. When camera pans inside they show what looks like an abandoned, empty maze of hallways, until it reaches an industrial size bathroom and the star, Stewart, is aimlessly looking at herself in the mirror and brushing her teeth. So, where are all of those 300 crew members?
After several minutes of wasted time in the bathroom in the bathroom Stewart notices a dripping of water from the ceiling and then the structure begins to collapse and she starts running. Long story short, there are only 6 crew members who are trying to survive on the damaged and slowly collapsing structure with no communications. I did not get a sense that there ever were any more than these 6 crew members. The captain says he sent a majority of the other survivors off in escape pods. Captain says they can make it to an abandoned mining structure a mile away by walking to it in deep sea diving suits that were not designed for the huge crushing pressures at their depth.
Along the way they encounter CGI sea monsters that move as fast as jet skis underwater. I would have preferred men is sea monster suits that move at normal rates of speed, as opposed to CGI monsters that can move at lightening speeds. The movie only goes downhill from there, which is what I found disappointing.
SPOILER ALERT
The most disappointing part of the movie was the ending. Of the 6 survivors, only 3 make it to the abandoned mining structure which looks like it is still in operation. Anyway, Stewart's character finds 3 escape pods, one for each of them. But, the third one is inoperable and she sends the other two crew members (boyfriend and girlfriend) in the two operable pods and remains behind. A CGI giant version of the human sized CGI sea monsters appears to destroy the mining structure and starts sending up the human sized CGI monsters up to catch up and destroy the two escape pods.
OK, I didn't see any reason why Stewart's character didn't just climb into one of the escape pods with the other girl (only one seat, but, in a pinch, two skinny women can easily fit in an emergency). That made zero sense to me. Except, and I did figure this out before it was revealed, Stewart's character had to stay behind (for the script)
because the giant monster was going to send hundreds of the human sized monsters after the escape pods. So, Stewart's character has to overload the mining structure's power unit to blow up herself and the giant monster.
The other girl knew that Stewart's characters was giving up her life to save her and her boyfriend. And this part of the ending is what I hated the most. The two escaped in their pods and survived and would know that Stewart's character sacrificed her life for theirs. Then the ending shows news clips of only two survivors of the mining structure's "accident." And then more clips showing mining company won't let the two survivors be interviewed, effectively covering up the incident and the monsters, with news they plan to start a new mining operation.
OK, that's where I drew the line with that nonsense ending. Why would the two survivors, who knew that Stewart's character gave up her life to save them, then betray her and cooperate with the company's cover up of the entire incident???
And you know why I give it 5 stars (because I can feel the film purists on my trail) – because this movie GOES THERE. I don’t know why science fiction films have been pushed to the side in the past decade or more (“Life” is another one, with Ryan Reynolds, that disappeared from theaters but was excellent) – probably wrong focus groups – but this is one that actually deserved attention.
Right from the get-go, the film takes off with something causing an underwater oil rig to fall apart. We don’t have time to get to know the characters and their each little nuances – no one has that kind of time – and the film knows this and so it just…well…starts.
Characters get their individuality later – and that’s completely fine.
And let’s be honest – you might be hesitant because, well, Bella…or Kristen Stewart (however you feel about either one, fictional and real). But, I wouldn’t let that deter you. Where there was Stewart constantly out of breath and just a little aloof in other movies, it works here as she’s an engineer who basically is the new Ripley for 2020’s “Alien” cousin (right down to an ending of running in underwear) trying to make sure everyone gets to escape pods while battling and escaping underwater sea creatures that threaten to destroy them as it did the oil rig.
That’s the other part of “Underwater” getting 5 stars, which is that it shows you the monster. Sure, there are jump scares and the scary music, and I would lower the volume or watch with the sound off unless you’re into that sort of thing, but this movie looks expensive. It’s not like those direct-to-video things you see on the Syfy channel (no offense, Syfy, you know we’re cool) - this one actually took time to make the creatures, show them to you, and then scare you with them (it’s like a cooler ‘Annihilation’).
This film is also very claustrophobic – so beware. Not only are they fighting for their lives underwater, they’re also crawling through tight spaces and then facing challenge after challenge in gear that almost looks like space suits.
And, really, that’s what “Underwater” is. It’s a space movie... in water.
But, like I say, it jumps right in and I’m grateful. Movies today, it’s like “Let me show you 15 minutes of setting” then “Let me show you 20 minutes of people staring at nothing or each other” to “Oh, I forgot, we have a plot, here’s the last hour”.
“Underwater” starts off with a bang, literally, and pretty much doesn’t let up. And for that, I’m thankful.
Thank you for not wasting my time as a viewer. Thank you for showing the monsters in detail ("Godzilla: King of the Monsters" fans will feel the love in this movie). Thank you for spending money on this film. Thanks for a film to watch to pass a lazy Saturday.
5 stars.
