Plot summary
Dr. Ben Cahill freezes up during an emergency at the hospital, worn down by a failed marriage and drinking. His superior orders him to rest, so he spends a few months at a property on Orr island, a former fishing village off Maine's coast that he once shared with his ex. Local men there take an instant dislike to him. Sheriff Hobbs asks him to look at animal and human corpses that carry odd injuries, inside and out. Cahill spots pincers on one of the red cockroaches lately overrunning the island, an oddity, and after reading up he calls a university entomology department, which knows the African species only vaguely.
