If you think : "I just don't like westerns." - I think that this is a mistake - it is a western only in its setting. Lovers of real storytelling, complete with action, drama, and love, need to not miss this !! Set in the context of might-makes-right, this is a movie which was far ahead of its time in relation to bigotry issues - released in 1964, this was probably a major reason it was not big boxoffice - that and those who are averse to the kind of violence the title mistakenly indicates. It has an excellent personal drama to go along with the anti-bigotry message. None of the few deaths in it are gruesome - and each is a significant addition to the story.
A true-to-life story of the loss, love, and heroism the good people struggle with while they deal with the evil and the apathy of those around them. Anyone who deals with the suffering of bigotry, a victim or defender against it, will identify with the movie.

On my list top 10 westerns. Well written script, excellent cast, great acting. I bought it, The entire story, a good western or any film, does not have to have guns blazing. This story is a sequence of events that begin slow and as the players true natures are reveled, it heats up to a terrific ending. The moments he lays eyes on her, he KNOWS she is special. No way he is leaving town, no way. Had it not been for her, the story would have gone in another direction. After he has all the background on all the townspeople, then he shows them all who he really is. AND the soundtrack was good, catchy backbeat, quiet, not overbearing, I really like how the music was used here. Not the magnificent 7, the magnificent 1. yul bryner. MUST SEE FILM.

Yul Brynner gave an iconic performance in the 1960 Western "The Magnificent Seven" playing Chris, a tough gunslinger and the leader of the magnificent group of seven celebrated in the film. Brynner starred in other Westerns and portrayed other gunslingers. In 1964, portrayed a gunslinger with the unlikely name of Jules Gaspard d'Estaing in the film "Invitation to a Gunfighter" directed by Richard Wilson. Although far less successful than "The Magnificent Seven" the film has its moments. Part of the problem with the film is the music. The earlier movie was blessed with a score by Elmer Bernstein and with one of the most recognizable main themes in film while David Raksin's score for "Invitation to a Gunfighter" is mostly -- noisy.
Set in the New Mexico territory in 1865, "Invitation to a Gunfighter" is a movie with a message as it explores racial, social, and economic prejudice in a small town just after the Civil War. When the town's only Confederate veteran, Matt Weaver, (George Segal) returns and learns that his farm has been confiscated and sold, he kills the usurper of his property in an act of self-defense. The crooked and powerful leader of the town, Sam Brewster (Pat Hingle) hires the nattily-dressed, articulate, and deadly Creole, Jules, to kill Weaver and to end the dissension his presence is creating. During what was to be a short stop-over, Jules has become taken with Ruth Adams (Janice Rule), who had been Weaver's lover before the war and who has since married a Union veteran who lost an arm during the conflict.
The movie shows how Jules goes about the task for which he has been hired. In the process, it unmasks the town's many shortcomings, primarily its treatment of Mexican Americans and its oligarchical economic structure controlled by Brewster. The movie also explores the growing relationship between Jules and Ruth and Jules' growth in self-understanding and in feelings for others.
The film begins well, setting out the story simply and with building dramatic tension. As the movie develops, it becomes overly talky and wanders off on too many tangents. It loses focus and sometimes drags.
Although the film lags, there is much to like in the performances of Brynner, Segal, and Hingle. The underlying story is interesting even if it becomes preachy and diffuse. In short, while "Invitation to a Gunfighter" is not of the stature of "The Magnificent Seven", it is worth watching, particularly for the development of the character of Jules by Yul Brynner.

Invitation to a Gunfighter was made before I was born. It brought to life on the screen conflicts as old as humanity with some of out darker traits tossed in so you do not ever get the chance to believe this is a shoot 'em up western. In the end the damsel in distress fares little better than she began. If there is a winner it is those honest hard working folk in the background as their plight is the plot despite limited screen time. Was probably a four star movie when it came out and maybe still is in all actuality. For simply staying timelessly relevant and giving the amazing Ms. Rule an intriguing character it gets a bonus star from this reviewer.

Outstanding production values, looks great. The acting is pretty good if Brynner's woodenness doesn't bother you. After a while it just seems like they tried too hard to make it Important with a Message and the writing wasn't quite up to it.
For major western fans only. 2.5 stars, really

I enjoyed how the mysterious gunfighter toyed with these self-righteous, arrogant, weak-minded townsfolk. The movie had its funny parts. It was enjoyable.
