This is a movie about family. Dysfunctional, irritating, rude, hilarious family. Jennifer Jason Lee stars as Pauline, pregnant and soon to married to unemployed, manic depressive loser Malcolm who is played by Jack Black. Nicole Kidman stars as successful writer Margot, Pauline's sister who seems to have borderline personality disorder. Nicole Kidman switches from sweet to angry to funny all in one scene. Along with Margot is her teenaged son Claude who really feels the wrath of the her erratic emotions. Pauline desperately wants Margot's approval, Margot wants to run away from her problems at home and Malcolm spends his time trying to fit in. This movie has such great performances and a really good story.

I can't get enough of this movie. It makes me very uncomfortable at times but then it is funny and charming in the next moment. I used to watch this when I was in the Peace Corps as a way to feel at home. Weird, I know. They all do an amazing job at being the most dysfunctional person in their family but the most normal, being the most likable most annoying. It is the perfect movie to watch before going home or to a family reunion.

That is some kinda f-----d up. Sadly, I understand this family. The familial catastrophe you see before you when you watch this film is something that Baumbach re-creates over and over and over. You can only really watch his films if you (like me) have some familiarity with this particular genre of family-f-----d-up-ness. I enjoyed watching the horribly unlikeably Margot (Baumbach is brilliant at the writing the most loathesome humans), and the relatively sweet sister (J.J. Leigh). The kids were good. Jack Black however cannot do drama -- he was awful. But I feel that Baumbach is trying to understand something about these people and he never quite feels satisfied that he does. So he has to do it again in the next film. These are people who turn on you FOR NO REASON, who betray your secrets casually, who genuinely love you one moment and then publicly humiliate you the next moment. And who are criminally inappropriate with their own children who suffer in a confused daze. And then grow up to make movies about it.

But I'm hoping that Baumbach -- who I think is talented -- never makes another film about these people again.

This movie needs to be shelved. As a period piece, it may be OK but in our current time its portrayal of two sisters dealing with a series of crises is awful. The women are caricatures of women in crisis -- irrational, crying all the time, unable to do anything except seek sexual solace from men and even when they do that they are tainted by their craziness. And of course everything is a daddy issue. Many many women directors have handled this material in a more meaningful way. Perhaps this movie is most revealing of the director's misogyny. Avoid it.

Ok so Nicole Kidman is always good and so are the other actors. But if a movie has a lame plot then there is no hope of it being entertaining. I don't mind sad or disturbing but this was boring. And the ending was just plain stupid.

i watch this over and over. i don't understand the poor ratings. this is an amazing movie. i think some of the best performances for kidman and black. leigh is always great.

i did not find kidman's character to be so awful as most reviewers seem to be in agreement about. just very real. although, i should add, i have been exposed to some very interesting characters in my life.

It’s definitely a Noah Baumbach film but the characters are not as likable as his other films making it harder to care for them. It’s dark.

This is a down to earth, subtly gritty take on people. A story with a no gaps and no weak cliffhangers. Mentally and definitely emotionally stimulating. The characters were candid and raw. No music or glossy sheen to make up for lack of substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Margot shouldn't have gone to the wedding basically!!

What a fantastic film - Kidman is brilliant and I couldn't help wincing at her brilliant portrayal of a complex and let's face it messed-up character. I do love a good messed up character and it's so easy to get it wrong - but Kidman and in fact all of the cast get this spot on portrait of relationships in turmoil completely spot on. If you liked 'The Squid and the Whale' you will ike this - if you didn't don't bother! I liked it and the product reached me fast and in brilliant condition!
