The Circus Maximus of ancient Rome was a real place. The largest arena in the world, it entertained over 300,000 spectators daily for nearly a thousand years. Chariot races, hunts and battles satisfied the Roman publics need for grander and wilder amusement as the Empire declined. The parallels between the high decadence of Rome and our present time are obvious. Entertainment dominates our culture, and ever-more-extreme reality shows dominate our entertainment. Many of us have become as bemused by the violence and humiliation that flood the 500-plus channels of our television screens as those mobs of imperial Rome who considered the devouring of human beings by starving lions just another Sunday show. Well I took a punt on this composition mainly as the write-ups I read stated that it was written specifically for surround.

After a lot of thought I have given it a 5/5 but I warn you this is a modern classical composition that is avante-garde in parts. The opening track and some later tracks of the main work have very discordant harsh trumpet fanfares that on first listen are unsettling especially as they come at you from all sides and in a non melodic manner.

The tracks I liked most were the other more barren/quiet tracks that are very subtle and echoey. The other composition, the Gazebo Dances is much more mainstream and more melodic.

The more I listen to this the more I like it but it will take a while for you to appreciate it if you are a traditional classical listener but the effort is worth it.

Having bought the CD, out of curiosity I obtained this Hi-Resolution Blu ray version and was not disappointed. This process presents Circus Maximus as it was meant to be heard, in full surround sound and it works. if you have the audio equipment to play it on you will give your system a true workout in dynamics. You have been warned!

Terrific sound but not a piece of music I would not listen to over and over. It will make your 5.1 system shine with bombastic drums and horns and the most subtle of sounds as well. I'd say 3 out of 5.

Voici un enregistrement qui devrait servir de modèle à tous les blu-rays disc audio présents et à venir.

Le concept même de l’œuvre y est pour beaucoup : des groupes instrumentaux disséminés dans l'arène d'un théâtre. Non seulement la dynamique mais aussi le placement judicieux des sons et leur réverbération contribuent au sentiment de réalisme et de surprise de l'auditeur, mais la qualité de la captation et le côté exhaustif de la notice qui décrit l'emplacement exact des groupes musicaux et la volonté du compositeur pour chaque mouvement nous montrent que l'on a à faire à un produit parfaitement pensé et abouti.

Ca change de la logique mercantile d'Universal qui réédite des BR Audio en simple stéréo (alors que des masters multicanaux existent déjà pour le SACD) sans apporter ne serait-ce que un surplus de débit (24 bits 192 kHz en stereo, ça ne ferait pas exploser la galette).

Bref, comme toujours, ce sont les acteurs dominants qui contribuent à tuer la poule aux oeufs d'or en s'en prenant ensuite aux consommateurs qui ne sont pas prêts à acheter sans justification d'innovation ou d'effort éditorial de la part des majors.

Von John Gorigliano für ein räumliches Hörvergnügen geschaffenes Werk, voller Bombast.
Ich persönlich vermisse etwas harmonischere Melodien, hier regiert eindeutig der Kontrast zwischen Laut und Leise - Langsam und Schnell- eben oft ohne wirkliche Harmonien-was im Kontext jedoch vollkommen berechtigt ist! Aber für mich etwas 'anstrengend' beim Hören.
Melodien und Harmonien bekommt man im 17 minütigen "Bonusstück" - "Gazebo Dances for band" geboten-welches klangliches jedoch um einiges abfällt- und damit die KLANGLICHE Qualität des 'Hauptwerkes' unterstreicht.
Dynamik, Auflösung, Räumlichkeit - mit einem Wort WAHNSINN!! Wenn eine marschierende 'BIG-BAND' durch das Zimmer wandelt oder sich verschiedenste Instrumente ein 'räumliches Duell' liefern, oder wenn teilweise extreme Dynamiksprünge die Wohnstube zum Beben bringen- werden einem die Vorteile von unkomprimierten Mehrkanal Sound schlagartig klar!! Man kann nur hoffen das die BLU RAY Audio viele 'Zuhörer' findet, damit auch Musik aus anderen genres ihren Weg auf dieses Medium findet!

Ce blu-ray est une franche réussite. Quand à la musique, elle est "révolutionnaire" voire "renversante" dans le genre... un vrai régal dans l'imagination... Mais là où j'ai été bluffé c'est dans l'enregistrement technique : une pure merveille, du vrai 5.1 au lieu de la bidouille hanituelle ! je l'ai même essayé en 7.1, c'est grandiose ! Mais pourquoi tous les ingénieurs de son ne font pas aussi bien ?
