Product Description

Product Description

A homicide cop, Denzel Washington, hunts a satanic force that shifts from one human host to another in this taut, terrific supernatural thriller.

Amazon.com

Although it received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike when released in 1998, this supernatural thriller benefits from a sustained atmosphere of anticipation and dread, and its combination of detective mystery and demonic mischief is handled with ample style and intelligence. Under the direction of Gregory Hoblit (who fared better with Primal Fear), Denzel Washington plays detective John Hobbes, who witnesses the gas-chamber execution of a serial killer (Elias Koteas). But when another series of murders begins, Hobbes suspects that the killer's evil spirit has survived and is possessing the bodies of others to do its evil bidding. Even Hobbes's trusted partner (John Goodman) thinks the detective is losing his grip on reality, but the dire warnings of a noted linguist (Embeth Davidtz) confirm Hobbes's far-out theory, and his case intensifies toward a fateful showdown. Although its idea is better than its execution, and the story's film noir ambitions are never fully accomplished, this slickly directed thriller has some genuinely effective moments in which evil forces are entwined into the fabric of everyday reality. Among the highlights is a memorable scene in which Detective Hobbes must track the killer as the evil spirit is transferred between many people via physical contact. Even if the film is ultimately less than the sum of its parts, it's an intriguing hybrid that resides in the same cinematic neighborhood as Seven and The Silence of the Lambs with a cast that also includes Donald Sutherland and James Gandolfini. --Jeff Shannon

Great movie

S7ven, Bone Collector, Insomnia, Taking Lives, The Watcher, Frailty...the 90's and early 2000's produced an interesting film noir/horror crossover genre - and Fallen is, in my opinion, the most criminally underrated film from that window of time. It's subtle, understated, creepy and moody. It doesn't rely on gore at all, but instead focuses on the dread of knowing that our protagonist is facing insurmountable odds and pure doom. It's also CRAWLING with amazing actors who all act the hell out of each of their roles. Even Donald Sutherland doing his signature creepy leer at Denzel in the first 5 minutes is enough to make you feel uncomfortable, right before Elias Koteas steals the opening scene in pure dramatic villainous fashion.

This movie is worth watching. Watch it and think about the time that it came out. Don't compare it to contemporary movies. Think about the content, the writing, and the beauty of NOT relying on gore to carry this premise.

This is a great movie. Haven’t seen in quite a few years but decided to buy and watch recently as our DVD was long a bit ago. Still just as good as the first time I saw it. Plus Denzel and John Goodman are both great actors!

I honestly didn’t know what to expect for this movie as the description was relatively vague. I found it really surprising and not at all what I thought it would be about. Denzel is fantastic as always. He’s one of my favorite actors of all time so I tend to expect a lot from him but also might be biased because he is a favorite of mine.

I am not a big horror fan, especially of the demonic possession themed movies. However, the ambiance of this movie is really sinister, and the acting is solid, especially the sequences when the demon changes hosts. And it does have a nice plot twist.

Huge Denzel Washington fan and in my view this is one of his best. Includes great acting by him as well as Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini, John Goodman and a great, bone chilling acting job by Elias Koteas. I highly recommend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ein Mystery-Thriller "vor" der großen Welle!
Reviewed in Germany on September 3, 2007
