Product Description

In the fall of 1979, one of history's most ingenious and courageous flights to freedom took place when two families fled from Communist East Germany to the West in their own handcrafted hot air balloon. Starring John Hurt (HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE), Jane Alexander (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES), and Beau Bridges, Walt Disney Pictures brings to the screen this remarkable true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families and their daring, death-defying escape.|Moved by accounts of two East German families' daring escape to the West in a hot air balloon, Disney executives urged their European editor to pursue film rights to the story. She did, and eventually, the two families flew to California to provide background material for the story -- and to enjoy a free trip to Disneyland, of course!

A Great True Story Of People Building A Home Hot Air Balloon To Try To Escape From East Germany To Freedom In The West! I Was There When “The Wall” Was Still Blocking People’s Freedoms! I Found This Good Movie To Be Emotional For Me.

The movie is well done and is a good reminder of how poorly and miserably the system of communism actually works. The educational value of this movie is high. My grandchildren watched it without making a sound - they are usually noisy and distracted. It held their attention well. I highly recommend this movie.

plot: in a divided Germany people in the east will do anything to come to the West even by a homemade balloon.

1978 and Germany is divided West is where you have freedom East was controlled by the Communists who build fences and walls to keep the East Germans from escaping. This starts with a young teenager who tries to bulldoze his way through the fences and past the guards. His shocking failure leads two (East German) families to make an even bolder escape plot: to make a hot air balloon and fly to freedom. This is very methodical, you see the families purchase each and every item they make to aid in the escape. Then the first attempted ends in failure of getting completely into the west. The second try was much more dangerous since the East German Border Guards and Secret Police were hot on the trail of the two families. Great cast John Hurt, Jane Alexander, Beau Bridges, and Glynnis O'Conner. The script is excellent and direction is excellent Delbert Mann his last movie. This was filmed in West Germany and has beautiful fall scenes add the realism of the movie. 5 stars~BASED on a REAL LIFE EVENT~

I was in high school when this escape took place and remember discussing it in German class. When Night Crossing was released, I watched it at the theater and enjoyed it, and in later years rewatched it on rented videos (VHS or DVD). It's a good effort to tell a compelling true story, but the acting is a little cheesy and production values then were not what they are now. The newer film of the same story, Balloon, is much better done. If you are ok with subtitled films and can access the subtitles on your device, I'd recommend it. Everything about Balloon is superior: writing, acting, cinematography, directing, etc. The biggest difference is the sense of urgency and suspense that is lacking in Night Crossing is present throughout the entire movie of Balloon.

In an era where we are constantly hearing what is wrong with America/the West and how we all need to adopt socialism/communism and abandon capitalism and the other principles of our founding, it is refreshing to remember the fruits of communism, and how desperate people have been to escape, who were living under that tyrannical system a generation ago. If our system is so broken and racist, why are tens of thousands of people trying to get in? And if communism is so wonderful, why were tens of thousands of people so desperate to escape? A perfect film for introducing young minds to thinking critically about the fruits of these polar opposite systems.

I enjoy this movie as a kid. We watched it with our kids and it provoked excellent questions from them about why the family needed to risk their lives for freedom from communism.

Excellent Disney movie about a family escaping communism in East Germany. Too bad it’s not on Disney+. A little violent in the beginning with a kid trying to escape to the freedom of West Germany and getting gunned down by automatic machine guns at the border. But very majestic music by Jerry Goldsmith. Very exciting. We watched it on the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down (11/09/2019). It was touching and a strong reminder of how blessed we are to live in a Republic that embraces freedom. I wanted my kids to see and understand how oppressed people lived behind the iron curtain in socialism/communism.

Two families secretly build a hot air balloon during the late 70s to fly over the wall from East Germany into West Germany. After several trials and errors they finally make it, but it was not without risks. The Vopos (volkspolitzei - people's police) and the STASI (East German KGB) are onto them. This is a movie in which you find yourself cheering for them as they miraculously get across without getting killed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film full of tension
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 21, 2016
Like lots of other people over the age of 40 I grew up during the tense times of the cold war wondering what life must be like in the GDR. When I was in Berlin recently I heard about the different ways people attempted to escape East Germany and one of the exhibitions mentioned people even using a hot air balloon. When I saw this dvd and realised it was based on that true story I had to have it. I didn't even know if their attempt was successful which made the film even more tense. Having said that it is one of those few films that I could enjoy watching again even though I know the ending. It was made a long time ago but it doesn't feel dated at all. The acting is very good and has some well known actors. The film also teaches you quite a lot about everyday life in the GDR without seeming at all 'educational'.
