Product Description

British comedy starring Burt Reynolds as Jefferson Steel, a washed-up Hollywood action star desperate to revive his flagging career. When his sleazy agent (Charles Durning) signs him up for what he believes is a high-profile Royal Shakespeare Company production of King Lear at Stratford upon Avon, Steel thinks he has finally landed the plum role he has been waiting for. However, he soon discovers that he has been tricked into joining an amateur dramatics group for a charity production. Imelda Staunton, Derek Jacobi and Samantha Bond co-star.

This is something that the Brits do well - comedy. 'A Bunch of Amateurs' joins a long list of classic comedies (In the Bleak Mid Winter, Mrs Henderson Presents, et al) that will be around forever. As an amateur performer for more than 40 years I saw myself many times as I watched characterisics that I could easily identify with or recognise from performers in my past. The film possbilbly won't be as funny for non thespians but certainly shows an aspect of theatre that is very true to life. Burt Reynolds was a curious piece of casting but I warmed to him as the story evolved. A load of fun!

Burt was his usual jerk sarcastic self. It really worked for him.
Funny enjoyable movie. Ending was predictable but that was ok.
Reynolds seems to shine more in movies that he is able to play
a jerk, and I think that is because he does not have to act.

This movie is the wrong format for the U.S. I am very disappointed that the website did not make it clear that this DVD will not play in a regular or blue ray DVD player. Waste of my money and worse I can't see this really funny movie.

A good fun movie which takes a swipe at snooty actors who have lost sight of reality!

5.0 out of 5 stars There ought to be more films like this one with the Bard's other plays.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2015
There ought to be more films like this one: Close-knit Village life, or is it? Common hobby interest of inhabitants but an undercurrent of rivalries. In this instance we find out a little or a little more about Shakespeare and King Lear. [Perhaps somebody should do the same with other plays of his.] Misunderstandings snowball, The end is in sight, but is it? No, it goes on to stagger to another end in sight, then another and another. A good satire on the tabloid treatment of apparently sexy goings-on. I loved the line when the bailiffs come and the victim says: "A paperless office? This is an officeless office!". Samantha Bond is a gem. The character change in Burt Reynolds as the plot develops is amazing. He looks exactly like my brother in law. I'd like to have seen more about the making of it and longer comments from the players on the Extras reel.
