Product Description

Are we shackled by civilization? What is a human being, when freed from the pressures of society? A Wind Named Amnesia explores Earth after a mysterious wind blows away all of humanity's memories and reduces people to a more primitive state. Through certain circumstances, Wataru has relearned how to speak and think, and now is determined to find out just what remains in the wake of the wind. Joined by a strange woman named Sophia, the two of them set out on a journey across what was once known as the United States of America. Along the way, they will witness the true nature of man, and just what it means to be human. O riginally written by Hideyuki Kikuchi (Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D), this movie is a timeless classic with a compelling, creative alternative to the typical post-apocalypse story. It's a must-see for any fan of animation!

...you're either too young to drink or too old to still smoke.
Don't believe me? Watch the last 10 minutes first. Then spark an owl and wait for it to sink in while you let the expository first half hour wash over you.

If this had been Stateside-made I would have placed it no earlier than '83 and no later than '87. It's got that thing from the 70's where they're like "high concept? no problem" and "naked boobies and weird religious overtones? two great tastes that taste great together..." but then also the 80's Camronian dystopia and creeping laissez-fascism themes rocking hard, with Reaganerica classics like "LA is heaven, New York is hell and it's a Wild Ride in Between" blowing the wig back on Burt Reynolds. Also starring Asian John Rambo.

So with the 90 release date, yeah, sadly, you're getting more Dukakis than Mondale, but if you get through enough of this movie to catch the Madonna and Christchild = Breastfeeding peak weirdness, I promise your bong won't be any worse for the dusting you give it to get you there.

I’m going to include a spoiler alert so look away now if you don’t want to read the rest or read it if you’re gonna be one of those people that complain about “wAsTinG tHeiR TiMe” after watching it. It’s your call.

“A Wind Named Amnesia” is a sci-if/ dystopian anime, it is not everyone’s cup of tea and I get it. I’m used to watching old anime as I’m a huge retro fanatic. That being said, even this English dub was treacherous to my ears but this is how most 80s/90s anime voice overs were, so you will have to deal with it.

Sophia, the white haired alien woman was lowkey annoying. She was so smug about everything and it never made it clear why she wanted to head to New York, unless that was where she was expecting to get picked up in the space ship. In that case, why couldn’t they just meet her in any other state? Also the fact that she didn’t really help much in terms of helping Wataru to destroy the guardian although she had the power to do so was a waste. Also yes it’s true, there are at least 2-3 black people even though it takes place in the “U.S”. And one of them had to a crazy witch doctor/ shaman. I want to say it was different time period but this was made in the 80s/90s so there really isn’t any excuse. I really didn’t appreciate how it left the viewer on a cliff hanger, I really wanted to know what happens next.

I gave it four stars because I think this is really a good story, I just wish it was written better. I would have never imagined a wind caused by aliens can cause all humans amnesia and tarnish life as we know it. Can you imagine the catastrophes that will ensue in our real world if that were to happen? We would all start from scratch just as the animation suggests. Honestly I really like the story, it’s remarkable.

And last but not least. I’m glad my homeboy had a taste of that alien gawk gawk, you know what I’m saying 😉😏

What can I say, it was 'okay.' I don't know that I'd describe it as the 'masterpiece' some have claimed it to be. But, on the other hand, it's better than some other anime schlock I've seen recently. Somehow, the end seemed anti-climactic and a bit 'odd' (aside from the nudity that didn't really appear to serve any purpose, which was also odd fan-service in my opinion).

The story itself was interesting enough, and the animation was alright. It was an overly-action oriented story (there was a little, but it was peripheral to the story). I guess it's one of those "classic" bits that's hard to categorize. I'd say it's worth getting and watching. Maybe a rental unless you find yourself really "into to." Of course, for the price (~$10), you might as well buy it (only a few bucks more than renting, and you can re-sell it if you want to).

So, kind of a mixed bag. I gave it 4 stars because it was interesting and 'above average' with decent animation. Can't give it 5 stars, however, on account of it was a bit odd and the ending didn't quite seem 'complete'. To each their own.

Sitting through this anime was torture, made worse by the awful dub. I've seen HUNDREDS of anime, and this is the worst I've ever seen. It's even worse than the thrown-together-for-money Inuyasha movies. It could be used by the US gov to interrogate terrorists. The worst part is the smug girl who lectures through the entire movie... She just won't shut up. There were a few heart-warming moments, but most of it was pitiful frustration at the horrors endured by humanity, and the stupidity/crimes that enable them to happen. The spoiler at the end where [x group] was responsible for the wind that became a worldwide mass-murder but it's just brushed under the table was really hard to stomach, considering the whole movie was a didactic moral lecture from the annoying girl. Is killing more people than the Austrian madman really okay if there's some sort of Valuable Life Lesson in it? To bad most people died too soon to get the lesson. Just... ugh. Also there's a somewhat detailed interspecies mating scene beneath a Christian icon in a church towards the end, if you're bothered by that kind of thing... But I'm honestly not sure if it's worst than the rest of this horrible movie.

Ed: Just remembered something to add. Even though the anime takes place ALL OVER the United States, only one black character appears... He's dressed like an ancient witch doctor and demands human sacrifices of innocent young girls. Because, you know, I guess that's what the writers think black people do or whatever. (I want to know where he got a witch doctor-ish costume after the fall of human civilization! Maybe he ordered it on UFO Ebay.)
