Product Description

Unlike most made for tv movies, this I found on dvd. It is the same good movie, has the "fade in/fade out" where the commercials would be but is a continuous play through. It is one of the hidden classics that isn't found on tv no more. Tony's character is well played and compliments to Lea for her 'bold & brash' but still a sensitive side portrayel. The movie reminds me (or was the baseline) of Bad Santa. It's another classic movie to add to the collection of Christmas movies with a good storyline.

I accidently came across this TV movie years ago while channel surfing. And after watching for a few minutes I decided to watch it through. The thing that caught my attention was Tony Danza's acting and his portrayal of a highly unlikable character that has made deliberate life choices creating a man tough and callous inward and outward. Seriously, his character is not the type of person you'd want to hang with and interestingly it is isn't overdone. Honestly I think it is Danza's best acting.

Lea Thompson plays a widowed mother with a young daughter and a business that has financial troubles in a small town. Yes it sounds filled with clichés that we have encountered more times that we can (and want) to count but keep in mind this movie was written and produced at a time when Hallmark was in its infancy creating their own brand of Christmas offerings. In Stealing Christmas there are no decorations that cost a years salary. There is no house that has enough square footage that would be able to fit several of our homes inside it.

In many ways the story is bitter sweet throughout as it unfolds. Danza's character is closed off. He is the center of his world and is unaware that he is protecting himself from the world that is to be used for his gain. He has set up walls that he believes he controls like any walls we have created for our self when the truth is they actually control us. But Thompson, her daughter and many of the town folk model acceptance and care that he can't accept because it is so foreign to the inner and outer world he travels in. Slowly but surely Danza's character opens up -- to a degree.

We all have different tastes as to what makes for a good story. To me this was a surprising minor gem

While a few people might have been misled during the first 10 or 15 minutes and never had an opportunity to view the rest of the movie, it's truly unfortunate, because this movie has truly become one of our all-time traditional Christmas favorites. We first saw this movie on TV about 5 or 6 years ago, and then we ordered it from Amazon.com. No matter how many times we've seen it now, it's probably one of the first movies that we watch each year at Christmastime. Tony Danza and Lea Thompson were great in this movie together. It certainly wouldn't have won an academy award, and it probably has a very predictable ending, but it truly has a very special message at the end. And who can forget the awesome warm performance by Betty White? You almost wish you had a very close relative just like Betty. It's just a real fun movie to watch during the Christmas holiday season. Some might find it a little corny but it's truly highly recommended on my list!

I love it! Give is a look! You may be surprised. Its a really cool and interesting movie. He plays a criminal who makes mistakes, meets good people then changes for the good.
