A very thought provoking film which questions the French penal system of the time and the rehabilitation of prisoners.
The last collaboration between two great actors, Jean Gabin and Alain Delon, who have quite different styles, but work together extremely well.
Delon is a bank robber released from prison after 10 years and determined to go straight helped by his social worker / probation officer, Gabin.
But life does not allow him to do that, his wife is killed in a car crash, his old criminal buddies try to get him involved in their plans and worst of all the cop who first caught him (Michel Bouquet) will not believe Delon is trying to go straight and keeps harassing him.
The situation worsens until it builds to an unforgettable final scene.

The film has English subtitles but not the special features which are, apparently, two very interesting documentaries. It a pity that the producers of these DVD's don't realise that they are mainly bought by film buffs who want to know the whole background to the film!
