Product Description

Aaron Eckhart stars as Nick Naylor, a sexy, charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator (William H. Macy) bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test. As Nick says, "If you want an easy job, go work for the Red Cross.]Spin-doctor for big tobacco protects the right to smoke.]0]]Jason Reitman]]]Aaron Eckhart]Maria Bello]Cameron Bright]Adam Brody]Sam Elliott]Katie Holmes]David Koechner]Rob Lowe]William H. Macy]

Set Contains:

The DVD bonus material is fairly standard, including two commentary tracks (one with director Reitman and another with Reitman and cast members Eckhart and Koechner), about a dozen deleted scenes (with optional commentary) and a couple of featurettes. Among the latter, the "making of" piece is little more than a Valentine from the cast and crew to themselves, in which they explain what the movie's about but not how it was made; an excerpt from TV's The Charlie Rose Show, with Reitman, Eckhart, author Christopher Buckley, and producer David Sachs does much better job of that. Meanwhile, the five-minute "Living in Spin" featurette is fairly pointless, insofar as it does the very thing it's criticizing (Reitman's comment that "This is not a movie about cigarettes, it's a movie about talking" is nothing if not spin). Separate galleries featuring posters, other artwork, and storyboards for the film are interesting, though. --Sam Graham

Wonderful theme and message

Political comedies often fall flat in the years after their release, and especially since the Trump era the genre has been a wasteland, but this one is a rare gem. The first time I saw this, I was a bit young. Just getting into politics, it wasn't the kind of movie I'd typically have bothered with. Ended up checking it out off a glowing review, and upon revisiting it years later it's fascinating how much it formed my political outlook at the time. Rewatching as a proper adult, so much more of the humor shines through. None of it is particularly groundbreaking insight, but it's solid comedy just based on the irony of what is there right in front of us. At once it lets you feel nostalgic for the way politics used to be, the almost-simplicity of it's corruption and amorality, and reminds you that politics was never good. Especially with how open the joke is of American politics these days, it's almost like a knowing nudge at the future in retrospect.

Meta-appreciation aside, the movie itself is a lot of fun. The gags are all pretty highbrow, the political jabs are at the system, not partisanship, so it holds up well even as the nicotine industry has moved onto brighter pastures with vaping. For antiheroes, they even do a decent job of representing some of the genuine issues from the side of the lobbyists, if a bit tongue in cheek with the delivery. The story is compelling, but it never loses the levity of the concept. It's a strange movie to be what it is and still be watchable all these years later, but it works. Perfectly cast, fun, but not stupid. Movies like it are few and far between.

The lines the actors said, the portrayal of political lobbyists, in a funny, comical way.

If you can enjoy Jokes, this movie is for you.
If you’re not a fan of jokes, do not watch this film.

This film delivers body blow after body blow to the world of the political spin masters. A great cast of actors punctuate the director's witty styling in showing us a slice of the life of Nick Naylor, the spin man for Big Tobacco. Surrounded by gifted dialog and tight pacing, it's a movie that is both timely and worth your time.

I had forgotten how funny politically incorrect was. That’s when people were allowed to people were allowed to have a sense of humor.

This film Thank You For Smoking involves the character of Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) being highly gifted/talented in his job as a public relations professional. The caveat is that Nick Naylor is involved in an industry where many people are affected one way or another by the type of work he represents. Maria Bello, Katie Holmes, Cameron Bright, David Koechner,Robert Duval, Rob Lowe,J.K. Simmons,William Macy, Sam Elliott, Dennis Miller, and more actors/actresses make appearances in this film. Pop culture references are obviously also made in the film such as pertaining to the Washington Post, Vermont Cheddar, apple pie with cheddar, the Marlboro Man, etc. The film itself is set in the Washington D.C. area.

A delicious send up of political correctness, the media, big corporations, special interest groups, politicians and just about every aspect of American culture. Despite the fact that the movie pokes fun at everyone and everything, it is not mean spirited; it is a smart, dark comedy that will leave you thinking.

This 2005 movie is based on a 1994 novel by Christopher Buckley (William F. Buckley, Jr.'s son). It stars Aaron Eckhart who shines as Nick Naylor a lobbyist for Big Tobacco. Nick's preternatural gifts for spin control, misdirection and obfuscation, coupled with a flexible moral compass, make him especially good at his job. You watch him navigate an interview on day time television, assorted press conferences, a divorce, a reconciliation with his son, a delightfully steamy affair with a reporter (Heather Holloway, played by Katie Holmes), a violent anti-smoking terrorist group, and his own conscience. I am not sure how you are supposed to feel about Nick. I found myself rooting for him, but uncomfortable with him: the kind of complex emotional response engendered by only the best movies. Definitely worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must watch !

Aaron does a stellar job in this satirical camedy as "The Spin Doctor" for Big Tobacco. Along with a great supporting cast ( Rob Lowe, Robert Duvall to name a few ) and his movie friends - the "MOD Squad " or the Merchants Of Death as they're refered to in the movie are also amazing. Unfortunately I believe the title may turn a few people off because of the "politically correct malaise" we're mired in today. But DON'T let the title vex you, if you need a good dose of satire/reality and a chuckle here and there give this finely crafted movie a spin - you won't regret it!

Molto divertente e ironico!
