Product Description

THEY GAVE THEIR ALL FOR THE TEAM!

Jack Hill spent the seventies specialising in tough female characters. He made movies about girl gangs (Switchblade Sisters) and women in prison (The Big Doll House, The Big Bird Cage), turned Pam Grier a star with Coffy and Foxy Brown, and contributed to the Cheerleaders line of drive-in favourites with The Swinging Cheerleaders.

Kate, an undergraduate at Mesa University, goes undercover as a cheerleader for her college newspaper in order to expose ‘female exploitation in contemporary society’. But instead of oppression she finds love, friendship and a bigger fish to fry: corruption in the football team, headed up by the coach and his pals.

A favourite of Quentin Tarantino, who screened it at the very first Tarantino Film Fest, The Swinging Cheerleaders features a cast of cult favourites including Colleen Camp (Wayne’s World, Game of Death), Rainbeaux Smith (Caged Heat, The Incredible Melting Man) and future Playmate of the Month Rosanne Katon.

low-budget and bare breasts
This is a really bad movie, but kind of funny. It definitely speaks to a certain aspect of B-movie culture in the 1970s. This is the kind of movie that presumably teens would have gone to see at the $2/carload drive-in, in Roseville. Although at that time, I was too young to have been taken to see that one. We would have been watching more of a kids movie at that theater, on a different night. I was unaware that this kind of low-budget college titty movie even existed, then. it wasn't until the 1980s, when I was a teen, that I saw my first of these kinds of movies with bare breasts and shallow metaphors for the politics of the war in Vietnam, with Porky's. :)

This is another gem from Jack Hill. I thoroughly enjoyed it. All Jack Hill's movies were made to be fun and this is no exception.

Getting into plot details in an Amazon review isnt my thing, but I'll just say that this movie doesnt turn out the way one might expect. Hill seems to enjoy pitching curve balls to an audience; leading them in one direction only to suprise them with plot twists.

The DVD is well done overall, with good special features and a clean widescreen print. I always enjoy listening to Jack Hill speak on his films, although I could do without this Johnny Legend character that accompanies him on this audio commentary.

In short; another must for your Jack Hill DVD collection!

Well I had saved this movie ..on my list.. Decided why not watch it.. Well it was okay.. The only actor's in it..that were watchable ..were Colleen Camp. Of course you know her from many movies and television shows.. of the past.. I think she started her career more than 50-something years back as a teenager? I was watching her in an episode of "Murder She Wrote" from the 1980's..She was the blonde cheerleader who was in love with Buck. He was played by the late actor Ron Hajek who died in 2011 from heart failure in Burbank,California. He guest starred on the "Walton's" V" and several other projects.. One of the campus cops was played by actoe John Quade... he worked in heavy rotation in the 1970's and beyond. He has been in many actor, director, producer "Clint Eastwood's" films.. As well as the older black lady named Mae Mercer who nearly assaults the younger black cheerleader in the laundry room. The one who was screwing around with her husband..? She died in 2008 in Northridge,California.. She appeared in many movies such as "Frogs" with Ray Milland, The Beguiled with Clint Eastwood from 1971.. Now the story idea kinda reminds me of the Kirstie Alley movie that was based upon feminist activist Gloria Steinem's expose' .. "A Bunny's Tale" when she went undercover at the Playboy club in the 1960's as a cocktail server. There was one scene that did bother me..was when the former reporter's boy friend..meets the "virgin" cheerleader.. and tricks her into something..? I don't want to offend anyone.. but watch the scene for yourself.. That is why women should NEVER drink around men... they aren't familiar with...?? I would say that this movie is much better than "Screw-ball's"..

From Arrow Video is the Blu-ray/DVD release of The Swinging Cheerleaders, which is from director Jack Hill. Hill had become known in the seventies for his films that focused on tough female characters, including Switchblade Sisters, The Big Doll House, Coffy, and Foxy Brown.

After making two blaxploitation pictures, he was offered financing to make a movie with the sole request being that it be titled The Swinging Cheerleaders. So the end result is something that Hill described in an interview included in this as a “Disney sex comedy.” It falls somewhere in the middle in regards to its tone, it is somewhat dark and serious while having some laughs and an all out screwball comedy fight sequence.

The story involves a college journalist named Kate (Jo Johnston) who chooses to go undercover as a cheerleader in order to expose what she believes is the best example of contemporary female exploitation on a college campus. Once she joins, her views change as she begins to develop friendships with the cheerleaders Lisa (Roseanne Katon) and Andrea (Rainbeaux Smith) and the all star quarterback Buck (Ron Hajek).

Despite deciding to drop the article in the end, she still has issues with the stuck up cheer squad leader Mary Ann (Colleen Camp) and her hippy boyfriend Ron (Ian Sander). She also uncovers a point shaving scandal being set up between a math teacher, the football coach, and Mary Ann’s father.

The things that make this quite possibly the best in the cheerleader sub-genre are the decent cast, a strong central female character, and the unique sub-plots for some of the secondary characters. Johnston is excellent in the role of Kate, who is portrayed as the smartest character in this and doesn’t renounce her feminism as she grows to care for the people in this sub-culture.

The sub-plots plots further develop a few of the secondary characters and examine some particular aspects of college life that exist. Smith’s character Andrea is going through a situation having to deal with losing her virginity to her football boyfriend, which evolves into a pretty terrible ordeal where she gets sexually assaulted by the hippy Ron and some of his friends.

Katon’s Lisa is having an affair with a professor that is married. She believes that they are in love and that he will end up leaving his wife, constantly questioning whether what they have is real at all.

Make no mistake about it though; this is a low budget 1970’s exploitation movie that was shot in only 12 days and features stock footage from other football in order to make it appear bigger than what it was.

Even though it is an exploitation film, it is fairly light on the sex and nudity compared to some of the others from the genre which may turn fans away. I believe its Hill’s weakest picture from the 1970’s because of the fact that it doesn’t have that dark tone that the others did and seems unsure at times what kind of movie it wants to be.

The extras are nice and contain several interviews and a Q&A session that total at around 40 minutes. The audio commentary is also worth listening to especially if you’re a fan of Jack Hill because he is on there with American Grindhouse director Elijah Drenner.

Bottom line, if you are a fan of Jack Hill then this an item you will definitely want to own. Other fans of the cheerleader sub-genre or sexploitation films should just be aware that while this is entertaining, it is essentially a soft-core motion picture and not as exploitative as most others.

Are you expecting a great movie? This is a cheesy exploitation flick. See it for what it is and you will not be disappointed.

1974 (not 2017) sexploitation film. Cheerleaders, gambling, fixing football games, sex with teachers. Parts seem silly, but not the gang rape of one of the cheerleaders, which greatly offended me. AKA Locker Room Girls and H.O.T.S. II. Factoid: "The original title of the script was Stand Up and Holler so actresses would not think the film was about cheerleaders." Not a nice movie on any level.

This is the most reprehensible cast of characters I have ever seen in a movie in my life. Not the actors, the characters. All of the characters are despicable to one degree or another except for the black professor's wife. She is awesome and should have had an entire series of movies all herself.

Despite the lack of sympathetic characters, the film works. It is engrossing and well-written, if cynical. It kept me engaged to the end. There are even a few comedic moments, but unfortunately, most of these are also shot through with cynicism.

The pretty girls make the film worth a watch, at least.

But remember, this movie is like watching a movie in which the characters are Satan, Satan's wife, Son of Satan, Satan's First Cousin, Satan's Neighbor... and the black professor's wife.
