I dedicate this to the movie it self, cause you read reviews based on whan they read or have heard.Severin Films did a great job on the restoration it self, the audio and video are amazing, I've never experimented this movie in such a way. The extra contents bring more to the movie, it gives it another angle to understand Jodorowsky's View, in the documentary of "goyo spree killer" I found it some what inaccurate, it is only based on a point of view and not on the actual studies. Me being a spanish speaking person, while watching the movie also found numerous mistakes on the subtitles making some scenes incomprehensible, so in my opinion a bit more work on the revision of these details would make this a perfect edition, but besides that everithing is A+. If you like cult films, you will fall in love with this beutiful disturbing and sad movie, it takes you trough diferent stages and emotions of a highly disturber man, based on his traumatic childhood.

Jodorowsky's films EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN were recommended to me by another reviewer a few months ago. I realised then that one of his movie SANTA SANGRE, was on my list to buy for a very long time, Aside from the perfect rating made by Roger Ebert and the other good critics, the reviews here on Amazon convinced me that this was something special, something out of the ordinary, something worth seeing if you like movies, especially non-commercial movies. To be honest with you, it took me a very long time to understand what was going on in this film, the tone was serious and violent but at the same time it was also funny and sometimes loaded with dark satire, almost complete non sense sometimes, but everything finally came together and once it was over, i was stunned! Wait, what was that ? What is it that we've just seen...was that real? The 2nd time i watched it, i knew this was a cult classic, something unique, something way above your regular horror movie, or B movie or any other movie....

Writing a plot summary for this film was way too complicated, almost impossible but here's what i found that made the more sense:It is the story of a young circus performer, his parents and his journey through life and what traumatised him as a kid in that circus. The young man, now older,gets confined in a mental hospital, which is how the movie starts. Through several flashbacks and old circus memories we can see what happened to him and his parents: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre ("Holy Blood"), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, the young man escapes the mental facility and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. Against his will, he "becomes her arms" and the two undertake a grisly campaign of murder and revenge. -Written in most part by Marty Cassady for IMDB Movie summary as I just couldn't find the right words for it, sue me!

I know this plot summary sounds completely crazy, but the movie is still a Masterpiece. It goes through a whole set of different emotions and bizarre imagery while building an unexpected tension until the very end to finally explode in a spectacular finale which stills gives me goose bumps and figures in my most impressive horror story conclusion acts/scenes. The cinematography, the concept and the music are all amazing and were never tried before. This movie has a lot of ambition on its own, its violent, surreal, bizarre and sexual all at the same time. It is simply outstanding and probably one of the best films I've ever seen in my life. A grower, not for everyone but definitely deserves to be seen. The DVD also has a ton of special features including several interviews with Jodorowsky himself and a few documentaries about him, his work and his beliefs

I was first made aware of Jodorowsky about 8 years ago via Roger Ebert's Great Movies column and from reading about his films in The Scarecrow Video Movie Guide. At that point in time, his movies were very hard to find on video. I eventually ran across a VHS copy of Santa Sangre at my local Hollywood Video and was amazed by the visuals and Jodoowsky's filmmaking technique.
I was very eager to see El Topo and the Holy Mountain, especially after seeing the documentary Midnight Movies, which features a section about El Topo and has some clips from the film itself. I found Fando and Lis from Netflix and found it very intersting, but not nearly as compelling as Santa Sangre. Finally when The Films of Alejandro Jodowsky box set came out in 2007, I was able to see El Topo and The Holy Mountain.
The visual language that Jodorowsky creates reminds me somewhat of Fellini and Pier Paolo Pasolini, but it is still distinctly his own. He combines the fantastical, mystical, and grotesque to make stories and images that are rarely seen in the cinema.
I have considered buying a bootleg of Santa Sangre over the years, but I'm glad that I resisted now that this film is finally on Blu ray. The special features are outstanding and give some great insight into what it is like to work with Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky seems to be an open book here and he gives the interviewers a wealth of information about his art, his process, and even personal details about his life. I haven't watched them all yet, but I am looking very forward to being able to explore his films for years to come. Now in his early 80's, I hope that Jodorowsky will have the opportunity to make another film someday (sooner rather than later!).

Santa Sangre is that "one of a kind" film that makes you feel changed somehow after a viewing. Such a statement sounds dramatic, but there are those special films out there that make you think "I'm so glad that I did not miss out on this." For me, Santa Sangre is that gem.

It's hallucinatory, frightening, amusing (black humor), surreal and ultimately...tragic and sad.

I won't give an entire synopsis or play by play of the movie. I don't feel like spoiling the experience for potential viewers (that's what the Wikipedia page and other reviews are for...). I prefer going into films knowing as little about the movie as possible. Why open your Christmas gifts the day before Christmas, right?

That said, Santa Sangre is told in flashbacks and the present. Felix is the film's protagonist and his journey is harrowing. In a strange way, Santa Sangre is more than a horror film or a surrealist's project: it's a psychological study of human bonding, family ties/loyalty, love and culture. It's a demented coming of age story...

Like a good horror film (or film, period) should do, Santa Sangre conveys social commentary and sociological and psychological subtext.

The imagery of the movie is gorgeous and horrific. Much like an Argento film, there is no shortage of color, quirky charters and elaborate set-pieces here.

If you've yet to see this film and you're a huge fan of the horror genre, do it now. If you've yet to see this film and you love film, see this now. Point blank: see this now.

Saw this movie many years ago,it still has the impact that it had then,far more than just a horror movie but an orange that can be peeled apart to savour its beauty,yes iconic religious imagery abounds some might consider it an attack on religion and ideas of faith.
This movie is so much more a patchwork of stunning images,soul searching pain,and how events that happen in our lives can carry over and rule how we live today, but the film has a message through love and reason we can over come most things,sometimes horror can be beautiful ,if you love film then this is a big must see,

In der mexikanischen Zirkuswelt lebt der junge Fenix (Adan Jodorowski), Sohn des Messerwerfers Orgo (Dean Stockwell) und dessen Frau Concha (Blanca Guerra), Anführerin einer Sekte, die in einer fantasievoll eingerichteten Kirche mit einem großen Becken rötlichen Wassers (Santa Sangre- heiliges Blut) eine Heiligenfigur anbeten, die abgetrennte Arme hat, Verkörperung eines jungen Mädchens, das vergewaltigt worden war und so grausam verstümmelt. Ein Geistlicher lässt den "gotteslästerlichen" Bau abreißen.
Fenix tritt als Zauberkünstler auf, dabei assistiert von der bezaubernden jungen Alma (Faviola Elenka Tapia), mit weiß geschminktem Gesicht wie einen Elfe aussehend. Mutter Concha ertappt ihren Gatten beim Ehebruch mit einer neuen Atrraktion, der ganzkörpertätowierten üppigen äußerst delikat knappst bekleideten Frau im String und Glitzer-BHFrau (Thelma Tixou), trennt die beiden mit Säure. Die Frau entkommt, der verletzte Gatte trennt Concha mit seinen Wurfmessern beide Arme ab, schlitzt sich dann selber die Kehle auf, was der in den Wohnwagen eingesperrte Fenix mit ansehen muss.

10 Jahre später lebt der traumatisierte Fenix (jetzt Axel Jodorowsky)wie ein Tier nackt in einer großen Zelle in der Nervenheilanstalt, hockt wie ein wildes Tier auf einem toten Baumstück in einer Astgabel. Bei einem Ausflug mit zahlreichen behinderten der Anstalt (Trisomie 21 überwiegt) lernen er und die anderen statt im Kino Robinson Crusoe das Milieu der Prostition kennen, wo er auch die tätowierte Frau wiedersieht, die junge Alma (jetzt Sabrina Dennison) wird als Zwangsprostituierte gehalten, eine Frau, mit der man alles machen dürfe.
Als er eines Tages vor seiner Zellen, die an ein Tiergehege erinnert, Gesang hört, sieht er durch ein akrobatisch erreiches Fenster hoch oben schräg oberhalb des Baumes seine Mutter mit den abgetrennten Armen, flieht und lebt fortan bei ihr, sie tritt mit einer beeindruckenden Pantomime auf, in der Fenix hinter ihr um sie greift und ihre Arme ersetzt. In ihrem Privatleben wird er neben Diener zum Werkzeug ihrer blutigen Rache.
Er trifft wieder auf Alma, die fliehen konnte, gegen Ende des Filmes soll auch die hübsche junge Frau durch Fenix` Messer Mordopfer der Mutter werden. Kann die Liebe über den Wahn siegen?

Alexander Jodorowski, von dem ich schon den blutigen "El Topo" kenne, hat mit "Santa Sangre" einen surrealistischen Film geschaffen, der nicht dem Genre des billigen Horrors zuzurechnen ist. Unter Mitarbeit von Bruno Argento, dem jüngeren Bruder der Giallo-Ikone Dario, hat er einen zu Beginn faszinierenden bunt ausgeschmückten Film über die illustre Welt des Zirkus und des Varietés geschaffen, mit Tieren wie Elefanten, aufreizend gekleideten freizügigen Frauen. Illusionen und Liebschaften, in der die Verführung des Vaters zu einer Tragödie führt, die den Knaben in den Wahn getrieben hat. Beginnend mit der bunten glitzernden Welt der Artisten und dem jungen Fenix, mit angeklebtem Bärtchen in schwarzem Frack und Zylinder mit der elfenhaften Alma als Magier auftretend, der sie im Kasten verschwinden und als erwachsene Schönheit knapp bekleidet wieder auftauchen lässt, schlägt der Film um in eine grausame Eifersuchtstat von Concha, nach der der verletzte Vater sie mit Zauberkraft mit unsichtbaren Fesseln an die Wurfscheibe bindet, beide Wurfmesser gleiten wie Butter durch die unmittelbar neben der Achsel nach oben geführten Wurfmesser, trennnen sie glatt ab, die Armarterien spritzen aus den Stümpfen, eine Szene, die schon weniger als Gemetzel sondern als symbolische Tat wirkt, so widerstandslos gleiten Wurfmesser durch Haut Sehnen, Fleisch und Knochen.
Die skurril lasterhafte Welt der leichten Mädchen mit einer walroßdicken Prostituierten (Ma.De Jesus Aranzabal), das Variéte mit der z.T von Marcel Marceau entliehenen Szene , in der Concha mit Feníx' Armen anmutig Gegenständen vor sich formt, Fenix' Arme, mit denen seine Mutter strickt oder Klavier spielt, die Morde, die er für sie wie unter Zwang, durch sie gesteuert als widerwilliges, aber ihr nicht widerstehendes Werkzeug auch ihrer Rache benutzt, alle Grausamkeiten sind so dasgesteellt, dass sie weniger als schreckliche Realität als vielmehr als Ausdruck des Wahns erscheinen, in dem er sich nicht gegen den Willen seiner rachsüchtigen traumatisierten Mutter wehren kann. Erst als er die auch als junge Frau wunderhübsche Alma wiedertrifft und diese durch ihre Liebe und Anmut der Mutter Fenix wegzunehmen droht, muss sich erweisen, ob die Liebe der beiden sympathischen jungen Menschen die Rachegelüste der verstümmelten Concha besiegen kann, sie vekündet Fenix, sie werde immer in ihm sein.

Alexandro Jodorowski hat eine skurrilen , fantasievoll symbolischen Film geschaffen, mit einem sterbenden Elefanten, dem das Blut aus dem Rüsssel läuft und der im überdimensionierten Sarg auf eine Müllhalde gekippt den Armen als Nahrung dient, die mit blutigen Tierfetzen aus dem Containersarg klettern. Pompöse Szenen und bittere Armut, die Welt der Prostitution, der Illusionen, Liebe, Eifersucht, Hass und Rache, eine Welt, in die der traumatisierte Fenix nach 10 Jahren in seinem Klinikgehege zurückkehrt und mit den Folgen des Dramas zwischen seinen Eltern fertig werden soll, fast willenlos als Werkzeug seiner Mutter die Folgen der in seiner Kindheit erlebten Schrecken (als Albtraum oder wie in albtraumhafter Realität) wiedererlebt.

Trotz der zum Teil drastischen Szenen wie den Messermorden und der bizarren Prostituierten, dem Ausflug der Behinderten ins Milieu, bei denen die Darsteller von Jodorowski absolut nicht entwürdigend zur Schau gestellt werden, ist "Santa Sangre" weder ein trashiger Horrorfilm noch eine Slasher-Orgie, sondern für mich ein surreal-poetischer Liebesfilm und eine Darstellung des Kampfes des traumatisierten Fenix gegen den verderblichen Einfluss deer Mutter, die seinen Willen zum Werkzeug der Rache unterwirft, sie wird immer in ihm sein, die Erinnerung an das Trauma wird sich nie ganz verdrängen lassen, aber bekommt mit der Liebe von und zu der wunderbaren Alma die Chance, den Dämon in Gestalt der Mutter in ihm zu beherrschen?
Ich habe Fenix und die bezaubernde Alma sowohl als Mädchen als auch als junge Frau, mit der er einen Halt in seinem Leben gefunden hat, der ihm vielleicht erlaubt, den inneren Dämon seiner Vergangenheit nicht ausbrechen zu lassen, so lieb gewonnen, dass ich hoffe, Jodorowsky wollte genau dieses ausdrücken.

Im Gegensatz zu David Lynchs Meisterwerk um den überwiegend dunklen "Mulholland Drive" und seine meist nächtliche Umgebung ist "Santa Sangre" ein farbenfroher, heller Film, der eine dunkle Geschichte erzählt, die nicht ganz so schwer zu verfolgen und eventuell zu enschlüsseln sein mag wie Lynchs Film ( vielleicht kann selbst Lynch das nicht komplett bei seinem Werk), aber auf jeden Fall ein filmisches Erlebnis, dessen Bilder lange haften bleiben wie nur wirkliche MEISTERWERKE.
