Product Description
In the vein of spoof cinema like Austin Powers and the Scary Movie franchise, Stan Helsing lampoons contemporary film audiences' never-ending fascination with what makes our blood curdle. In the story, hapless video store clerk Stan Helsing (Steve Howey) and his friends must make a routine video delivery on Halloween night before going to a Halloween party. But when a chain of seemingly random mishaps strand Stan and the gang in Stormy Night Estates, Stan learns of his true destiny as a descendant of the legendary monster-hunter Van Helsing. With his motley band in tow - including his best friend Teddy ("Saturday Night Live" star Kenan Thompson), he will battle evil in the form of parodies of movie monster icons "Freddy," "Jason," "Leatherface," "Pinhead," "Michael Myers," and "Chucky"! the ultimate confrontation between good and evil will require immeasurable courage, grim determination - and a flair for karaoke?!?

Okay, as a premise, it's contrived. The characters are pretty much rout. No surprises in where it ends. But that said, it's a fun journey. It's a PARODY. It even says so in the opening credits. As such, lower your expectations, take your brain off the hook and enjoy the running gags, overlook the inconsistencies and just have fun with it.
If you're looking for "drama", keep looking. If you're looking for "suspense", it's over in the suspense aisle. It has the grace NOT to take itself seriously, and the character development is actually not bad (in that there actually IS some). The jokes range from puns to outright raunchy, well deserving of the R rating, but it's not gratuitous in the sense that they could have been a LOT more gratuitous had they wanted to.
It actually follows a plot, even if one that tests the boundaries of Chaos Theory, and it's entertaining if you overlook the flaws that it has. As a parody, I'd give it a B. I've seen better, but those are few. I've seen a LOT worse.
The best part is that the characters own their characterizations. They don't skip a beat, and seem to be enjoying their roles. The interaction between the four main characters really carries the show, even if it mostly consists of witty (or completely inappropriate) remarks in the face of "danger". Their consistency and development through the show is what really worked for me. The humor bore most of that weight.
If you don't expect much, this will be a pleasant surprise. If you over-expect things, it MIGHT deliver. It's definitely worth a look.
By the way, throw in Leslie Nielson and there it is. Fun, fun and funny.
It's not funny. It is not funny. It's sans-funny. A character saying aloud the name of a horror movie isn't funny. The simple act of making reference to pop culture isn't funny.
Every scene - and the dialogue especially - is played straight, which, in normal comedies, is what leads into comedic situations, but since this is a movie made by people without brainstems, the scenes end before there's even a set-up of a joke. So what you have are characters yelling lines that are in-character for a horror movie but have no inherent humor, which means the yelling must be the joke.
Oh man, there is this one scene that nearly caused my sides to burst. The character Stan goes into a gas station and is recognized as Van Helsing and shown a drawing in a book that looks like him. I nearly died when he said "I'm not Van, I'm Stan" and the guy said "No, you're Van" to which Stan replied "But I'm Stan" and the scene ended. You can't write gold like that!
