(1) Take a wild ride through darkness with Death
Riding the Bullet (2004) fantastically explores darkness and death. Knowing absolutely zilch about this film prior to watching, it wasn't until about halfway through that the plot became clear, which was enjoyable. Seeing the trailer afterward, the aura of mystery would've been spoiled. If you enjoy going into a movie with a blank slate, read no further.
Riding the Bullet, arguably, is a super-artsy film with excellent acting and a creepy, haunting, intriguing story. Primarily set in 1969 (What's with the reference to Cheech and Chong!?), the main character is fascinated with, fixated on death. Death visits him, surrounds him, taunts him. Ultimately, death takes him--against his will--for a fast ride in a red-hot Fury, in route to a destination that he's not prepared to face.
What a wild ride! Riding the Bullet compares life to a roller coaster experience and sums it up with a classic, pithy epitaph from the mind of the King of Horror: "FUN IS FUN AND DONE IS DONE."
(2) An insane rape-revenge, female-power story
While it could be argued that the entire story was fantasized in the mind of mystery novelist Tess Thorne (outstandingly performed by Maria Bello), based on Stephen King's other works, it's more likely that apparent reality was mixed with fantasy in Big Driver (2014). Thorne's overt conversations with her cat, GPS unit, and four elderly friends who manifest from her mind attest to her wildly creative--perhaps disturbed--imagination. Was King inspired by people who have said HE is a crazy author? It's as if the underlying message was "If you want to meet a writer consumed with madness, check out Big Driver."
Although this movie was made for the Lifetime TV network, graphic, intense violence was portrayed several times. And, the story raises awareness of social problems/discrimination that women encounter in current times. Particularly, after being victims of sexual crimes, they are subsequently blamed and made to feel guilty, or the matter is trivialized by the system. But when Thorne is subjected to a horrific, traumatic experience, she unrepentantly and relentlessly metes justice on her own terms--well, also with help from her empathetic GPS unit, Tom, and her sage, hoary-headed imaginary aunty, Doreen. Big Driver is marked by excellent performances and an intriguing story that keeps you wondering what's real and what's not until the end.
