Anne Hathaway shines as Josephine Chesterfield, a glamorous and sophisticated con artist who is an expert in the art of deception. Her character is brought to life with impeccable comedic timing and a magnetic charm that keeps you thoroughly entertained throughout the film. Hathaway effortlessly portrays the elegant and cunning persona of Josephine, pulling off impeccable cons with ease.
Rebel Wilson steals the show as Penny Rust, a brash and loudmouthed scam artist who discovers Josephine's world of conning and decides to learn from the best. Wilson's unique style of comedy injects the film with a hilarious energy, often displaying her impeccable physical comedy skills that leave the audience in fits of laughter. Her chemistry with Hathaway is electric, resulting in countless side-splitting moments.
The film's clever script, written by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, and Jac Schaeffer, successfully balances perfectly-timed humor with unexpected plot twists. The dialogue is sharp and consistently laced with quick-witted exchanges that keep you engaged from start to finish. The pacing of the film is expertly done, never dragging or losing momentum, ensuring that the audience remains engrossed throughout the entire runtime.
The Hustle also excels in its visually appealing cinematography, with picturesque locations in the French Riviera serving as the backdrop for the intricate cons. The vibrant and lavish settings perfectly complement the charismatic performances of the cast, adding an extra layer of allure to the film.
Furthermore, the empowering representation of strong and intelligent female characters in The Hustle is praiseworthy. It showcases the capacity of women to be just as cunning and deceitful as their male counterparts, proving that they are not to be underestimated. The film delivers a message of female empowerment while still maintaining a lighthearted and enjoyable tone.
In conclusion, The Hustle is a delightful comedy that promises endless laughter. Hathaway and Wilson's impeccable comedic performances, coupled with the film's sharp writing and visually stunning cinematography, make it a must-watch. Prepare yourself for a hilarious and thoroughly entertaining ride that will leave you smiling long after the credits roll.
For those who get the blu-rays, the movie looks and sounds great in HD. The cinematography is wonderful, and there are some really great visuals that really pop in HD. There are about 15 minutes worth of behind-the-scenes and making-of material and a commentary track on the movie by the director. Good for what is there, but not extensive.
Overall, the movie makes for a fun comedy. Wilson's physical comedy is great and the comedy is a good mix of low and high brow. I would not say it is the best comedy of all time, but there are more than a few laugh-out-loud moments, even though I was never doubled over laughing. Certainly, there will be people who are fans of the original movie who will not like this as a remake but I think it can stand on its own without having to do a shot-for-shot comparison with the original. The movie flows well, and at just under an hour-and-a-half does not seem to take to long from beginning to end. I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a fun comedy.
