Toy Soldiers is a slick dose of high-concept absurdity, and lots of fun if you don't think about it afterward. Adapted from a novel by William P. Kennedy, it's got the swift momentum that's a specialty of screenwriter David Koepp, whose later credits include Jurassic Park and Spider-Man. Matching Koepp's narrative energy is director and cowriter Daniel Petrie Jr., who wrote Beverly Hills Cop, and whose big-screen career stalled after this crowd-pleasing debut. The hokey plot involves a class of prep-school misfits (led by Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton) who use their rebellious ingenuity to foil Colombian terrorists who've taken over their school. The lead villain (Andrew Divoff) demands the return of his extradited drug-lord father (one of the prep students is the residing judge's son), and the inevitable showdown provides a heady mix of nonsense, graphic violence, and military muscle. It shouldn't work but it does, especially if you've got a tolerance for Die Hard clones that barely pass inspection. --Jeff Shannon

(Bob Newby from Stranger Things.) This had him on the hook, and he really did enjoy it. This movie has aged well. Just tell your kids Bob Newby is in it.

when i was young(er) i used to get home late turn on the t.v. and watch lots of random films, most of which i don't remember for some reason or other, this timeslot usually reserved for the banal. but on one occassion this film came on, and it absolutely blew me away. now, probably the best part of twenty years later i finally own it on dvd, and thankfully it still holds up. quite often films and tv shows from ones younger days are a let down. this is not.
the plot is simple; a boarding school full of boys taken over by terrorists. but what really reels you in is a combo of three things. great acting, tension, and brutality.
all of the actors in this are top drawer, but louis gosset jr and will wheaton really shine. the bad guy, whose name i don't recall, is equally brilliant and menacing. the brutal beginning really ramps up the tension, and gives us a clue as to whats in store. the violence is well executed, and not over the top to devalue the film, but horrific enough to engage you. all too often in films they shy away from actually showing the gritty and have the violence implied. which numbs the viewer. this definitely is not the case here. as the boys rebel against their captors, you are drawn in and made to care about the various characters, their lives, and the outcome of their situation, which takes a nice interesting twist. one of the best films of its generation.

A classic early 90s action movie that stands up remarkably well. Some well staged action and enjoyable performances from all the leads makes this teen romp believable (despite its ludicrous plotting) But i am sure anyone looking at this already knows the movie is great. This blu ray print is surprisingly great with a beautifully clean print displaying minimal grain structure but a great depth and detail to the image.
The audio is only 2 channel but is robust and detailed ensuring voices are clear and never a chore to hear despite what is going on around.
the disc lacks any extras whatsoever but it remains a great film with a great image and good if unspectacular audio.
