Over all, the movie was very realistic. Dakota Fanning did a really good job playing the roll of an Autistic girl. She shows a lot of the signs of being Autistic, not giving eye contact, having a few meltdowns, people trying to take advantage of her, she got easily confused, stuck to a routine, etc.
She was a Star Trek fan and she wrote a 400+ page script. However, most people who have Autism Spectrum Disorders are not good at wiring. They are also not usually very creative. Most Autistic people are very logical and they're usually really good at things like: Math and Science.
There were a few things they did not show in the movie which would of made it a little better like somebody pulling a joke on her and at least one situation where she would have said something, but had no "verbal filter".
People with Autism usually don't understand jokes. If someone would of told her a joke and she would of gotten really confused and not understand that it was a joke and most people would of found the joke funny or, better yet, if she would of taken the joke literally, someone says something for a joke, but she takes it seriously and actually thinks what the other person said was really true so she doesn't laugh. That would have made for a really good scene in the movie.
They did a really good job showing her journey of trying to get to LA to drop off her Star Trek script and having a lot of problems along the way.
Anybody that has an Autism Spectrum disorder should definitely see this movie.

Having Asperger's myself, I could really understand this movie and all the problems that the main character experienced. I could actually feel Wendy's pain on a lot of her experiences, because I've actually experienced some of the same or similar things.
(I saw a news paper article in a news paper from Los Angeles, the article had some pretty bad things to say about the movie. It said the movie wasn't very realistic. It did not do a good job showing what people with Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorders really experience everyday or how they truly act. However, from my personal experience of actually having an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger's) myself, I must say, the person who wrote the article didn't know what they were talking about. From what people have told me about the things they've observed about me, my own experiences and research that I have done on Autism Spectrum Disorders, I can say, the movie was realistic. It was well worth 5 stars!!!)

This movie is incredibly good, Which makes it so tragic how it was marketed. The movie is about a young woman who goes on a, for a lack of a better word, quest to deliver a script to possibly be made into a Star Trek movie. Living with autism, she struggles with managing her day to day life. Her sister thinks she's broken and her therapist is the only one she feels a real connection to. My wife works with autistic children and she said this is an accurate and respectful depiction of someone dealing with autism.

It's a very emotional and heartwarming film. This is a real gem. Which why it's so infuriating that the studio was too afraid to present this film as is to the general public. If you watch the trailers for the movie it's marketed as a vapid comedy. They make it seem like the film is about a quirky girl who goes on a road trip because she a Star Trek fangirl. They even show the scene with Patton Oswalt as the big joke of the trailer.

So the movie was seen as too frivolous by indie film watchers and too generic for mainstream moviegoers. Which is very sad because this film is a real gem that needs more attention. So you should totally buy this film and after watching tell your friends and family. It really deserves more press

One can never go wrong with either Dakota Fanning OR Patton Oswalt in any film endeavor. Toni Collette is also a favorite of mine. I am an adult autistic activist and mother to an autistic daughter, so this is refreshing to see a young autistic woman as the heroine of her own story. I did like that they showed Wendy as a creative writer, since I am one myself; we're not all math/science whiz kids. Representation matters so much! HOWEVER........

Spoiler alert :

What had me cringing is a scene about eye contact at the beginning of the movie. It WAS realistic as many therapists do tend to fixate on this whole concept of eye contact being somehow necessary for anyone. It isn't, and I really-really-REALLY wish the world at large would stop treating eye contact as an indicator of either good moral character or intelligence. But that has nothing to do with the quality of the movie itself, and it's more of my own pet peeve when it comes to how people view and treat autistic people.

Overall, this movie made a few small steps forward in more realistic portrayals of autistic women, but still very stereotypical, with some glaring misperceptions that could have been more accurately depicted. I continue to hope that film makers will seek out guidance from #ActuallyAutistic people before rushing in for a feel-good response from moviegoers. Many of the autistic women I have the honor of knowing have fantastically snarky senses of humor, we don't all wear specific clothing set out for each day of the week, and we display more emotion than the cliches allow.

This is my second movie that I have been impressed by the acting by Dakota Fanning. Her other excellent performance I remember too well was in  The Secret Life Of Bees  wherein she played a role for Lily Melissa Owens. In that movie Lily is the main character, protagonist, and narrator of her story. That too was an excellent movie to watch.

This movie is another outstanding performance by Dakota Fanning. Although this movie is categorized as "comedy-drama" film, there is more important message on people suffering from autism and a fixation on
Star Trek  series. The main character played by Dakota Fanning spends her time writing a 450-page Star Trek script to enter in Paramount Pictures' screenwriting contest in hopes of winning the $100,000 prize.

Will she win that prize? will she be able to make it to Los Angeles in time? and all the things one woman with autism had to face and overcome is what this movie all about. Watch it.. It has good message, Good acting and brings positive feelings in the end. Worthy of five stars!

Quality cinema, Oscar worthy performance by Fanning, great script, well acted, good camera work, decent score, can’t believe more people don’t talk about it when discussing good autism representation in film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The desire to be loved and accepted by family
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2020
Such a heartwarming and fabulous portrayal of a person on the autistic spectrum in a special needs boarding school with an obsession.
The desire to be loved, accepted and be with family is the undercurrent of the story. How this comes about is via the oportunity to write a script for a Paramount Studios competition, and the story is about this persons obsession: Star Trek.
Seen through their eyes, the journey is long and hard to get this scrpt to Hollywood, showing us her resiliance and resourcefulness.
Fantastic acting, super script and story, very well thought out and grounded production.
Wholy embracing film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Schlampige DVD
Reviewed in Germany on August 11, 2023
Film 5 Sterne, DVD 0.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little movie
Reviewed in Canada on June 30, 2018
I have a nice Dakota Fanning movie collection. Always found her to be a smart actress who chooses interesting movies. Even an early thriller like Trapped with kevin Bacon and Charlize Theron went places I didn't see it going. Please Stand by is a little different, as she is the star of this film, so often she's a supporting character. It might not be a perfect movie, but I loved that it brought up questions about Mental Health, not just about the character, but about everyone's role in helping someone who is a little different operate in a world that is very hard to operate in, even at the best of times.
