Product Description

Eight Legged Freaks (DVD) (WS)

What do you get when you cross toxic waste with a bunch of exotic spiders? Eaten. As every fan of classic spine-tinglers knows, given the opportunity and the right chemical enhancement, arachnids will grow to humongous size and wreak havoc upon humanity. In "Eight Legged Freaks" the residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight to the size of SUVs. And they're hungry! When the alarm is sounded, it is up to mining engineer Chris McCormack and Sheriff Sam (Samantha) Parker to mobilize an eclectic group of townspeople, including the Sheriff's young son, Mike, her daughter, Ashley and a paranoid radio announcer named Harlan to battle the bloodthirsty eight-legged beasts.

Shout Factory finally brings this delightful forgotten creature-feature comedy to Blu-Ray!

Shout Factory finally brings this delightful forgotten creature-feature comedy to Blu-Ray!
"Eight Legged Freaks" is one of those movies that hasn't quite earned a major cult following, but definitely deserves to. This early-2000's creature-feature comedy has a lot going for it-- some sharp comedy, icky gooey monsters, fun performances... heck, it even has an early turn from a young Scarlett Johansson. And yet, it's been almost completely forgotten as far as I can tell. And that's a real shame, because I think it actually holds up quite well. The small town of Prosperity, Arizona suddenly finds itself besieged by giant man-eating mutant spiders after a toxic waste spill. And it's up to a motley crew of heroes (David Arquette, Kari Wuhrer, Scott Terra, Doug E. Doug, Scarlett Johansson, Rick Overton) to squash this threat and save the day!Directed and co-written by Ellory Elkayem, "Eight Legged Freaks" is a very entertaining bit of campy fun that often feels reminiscent of movies like the original "Tremors" and "Deep Rising"-- monster movies with a likeable cast and a strong sense of humor. It's well-directed and structured, and each character feels clearly defined and has their moment to shine. On the whole, it's a really competent movie. And the cast is absolutely great. David Arquette in particular shines in one of his best turns as a leading man, and Wuhrer is incredibly engaging and fun. Special props definitely go to an underrated Overton and a hilarious Doug. And Terra and Johansson also do quite well for their young ages. It's just a really good ensemble all around. And thanks to Shout Factory, we finally have this movie on home video in HD. All around, the 2K transfer is very solid, and is a good step-up over the old DVD edition. The image is generally sharp and the colors are suitably vibrant. And the sound quality is also quite good. All-in-all, this is easily the definitive home video release at this point in time.In terms of extra, Shout does provide us with a new retrospective documentary that is fun and engaging. Running about 45 minutes, it features interviews with several cast and crew members as they reminisce about the film's production. It's unfortunately noticeable that the documentary was filmed in the time of COVID, as all the interviews seem to be shot via webcam at the subjects' homes. But I can't fault them too much. They did the best they could during a global pandemic. Also present are previous DVD features including a fun commentary track and the original short film "Larger than Life" that inspired the movie.I'm really happy that Shout has given a spotlight to this delightful little film. It's a really entertaining flick that deserves a lot more recognition. Hopefully this new release will give it some much needed exposure.I'm giving "Eight Legged Freaks" on Blu-Ray a 5 out of 5. The movie is a lot of fun. The new HD transfer is excellent. And the extra are really solid. If you're a fan of horror-comedies, I'd highly recommend it.

this movie is a hoot and a half, not scary but super fun!

I was kind of disappointed in some reviewers in their opinion of this movie. My impression of the movie wasn't that it was supposed to be some big blockbuster, special effects extravaganza, but a homage to the great 'giant bug' movies from the 1950's. In that respect, I think the dircetor and actors did a pretty good job. Another reviewer commented that there wasn't enough gore. Again, if you go back and watch those classics, it wasn't about the gore, but trying to scare the bejesus out of somewhat naive movie viewers. I think the actors did a pretty good job, and I noticed the deleted scenes contained a fair amount of the character development scenes. I am asuuming these scenes were removed in order to make the movie move at a speedier pace, keep the action going. The story involves a town trying to deal with the invasion of giant spiders. The cause of the giant spiders in not atomic radiation, as was the cause for so many terrors back in the 50's, but the accidental release of toxic chemicals in a local water supply. I would have liked to seen this movie take a more serious approach, but I enjoyed the humor. The original movies always had a serious tone, but watching them now, they can seem unintentionally funny. I don't care for so much CGI work in movies, but if it's done well and not used to cover plot holes or lack of stories, then I will accept it. I thought the spiders were done quite well, and I got some genuine creeps out of watching them attack the townspeople. All in all, this was a fun movie that reminded me of those classics I love so much.
