Product Description

Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez (1964) / Saint-Tropezi Csendor / Region 2 PAL DVD / Audio: French, Hungarian / Subtitle: Hungarian / Actors: Louis de Funes, Genevieve Grad / Director: Jean Girault / 95 minutes Region 2 PAL encoding (This DVD will not play on most DVD players sold in the US or Canada [Region 1]. This item requires a region specific or multi-region DVD player and compatible TV.) 5999545588126 Ludovic Cruchot (played by Louis de Funès), a gendarme in a small French village, has been re-assigned to the seaside commune of Saint-Tropez under the orders of command sergeant major Gerber (played by Michel Galabru).

A classic by Louis de Funez - Love his movies
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2003
"Le Gendarme De Saint-Tropez," as subtitled in English, is a fine display of the comedic style of Louis de Funes.

Like Peter Sellers, Jackie Chan and Jerry Lewis, and even Charlie Chaplin, de Funes' humor is in his missteps just as it is his choreographed moves. They all share a thread of technique that, though their genres are different, are similarly funny.

This farce has de Funes acting as Ludovic Cruchot, a local police officer who receives a promotion.

Cruchot and his daughter move to where the new job is and try to fit in. He tries to achieve great discipline with his new men, and for a while, earns their respect. His daughter, however, wants to impress some of the wealthier neighbors and flirt with their sons, and claims Cruchot has a huge yacht. This lark leads him to mixed up with the high rollers of the town, and also, unknowingly with a few art thieves.

What ensues is tremendous, but hilarious confusion, as Cruchot tries to keep his daughter's ruse while avoiding his boss' catching him, and somehow deal with the art thieves.

Can Cruchot pull all of this off without getting in trouble? It does not seem so, as things go wrong unexpectedly. Cruchot squirms and wriggles, and it works almost 30 years later.

Although it is subtitled from French in English, the humor comes through. Surely the French speakers will find it funnier, but it is still a film worth recommending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Seller-customer relation
Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2020
The 5-star rating is for the seller who immediately responded to my query.
This dvd cannot be watched in North America; it is for the European market. Initially it was NOT mentioned in the description of the product. The seller sent me a full refund. Unfortunately, I cannot watch the dvd in Canada. There are no players that can read it. Sad :(:(:(

3.0 out of 5 stars deutsche Tonspur fehlt bzw. ist nicht komplett synchronisiert
Reviewed in Germany on February 27, 2017

1.0 out of 5 stars M.B.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funés is simply brilliant and this film sees him at his best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2014
Funés is simply brilliant and this film sees him at his best. However, be advised that there are no sub-titles so you can only get the best out of it if you understand French. If you do, you won't be disappointed.
